The Ministry of Defense announced disciplinary measures for a total of 220 people, including the Vice-Minister of Defense and the heads of the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces, and 218 people excluding duplicates, in response to the inappropriate handling of “specially designated secrets” by SDF members and the fraudulent receipt of diving allowances.
The cases that were subject to disciplinary measures were “leakage of specially designated secrets,” “fraudulent receipt of diving allowances,” “fraudulent eating,” and “power harassment by internal bureau executives,” as well as “violation of command and supervision duties” by executives in relation to these cases.
In relation to the leaking of specially designated secrets, 113 people were suspended, had their pay reduced, or were given warnings for having unqualified personnel handle specially designated secrets related to national security on Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels, including Aegis ships, or for placing them in a situation where they could learn of them.
Regarding the “fraudulent receipt of diving allowances,” 11 members of the Maritime Self-Defense Force were dismissed for fraudulently receiving diving allowances despite not actually diving, and a total of 74 members were disciplined, including suspension, pay cuts, and warnings.
The largest amount of fraudulent receipt per person was about 2 million yen, and this member had received the allowance by fictitiously claiming to have dived for over 1,500 hours.
