[September 1st, Korea Wave] South Korea’s Hyundai Motor has announced “EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle)” as a new technology and is developing a next-generation electric vehicle (EV) with high marketability. The EREV can travel more than 900km on a full charge and is cheaper than an EV. The EREV is similar to a hybrid vehicle, but has both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Unlike hybrid vehicles, EVs are powered solely by electric motors. The engine charges the battery, extending the vehicle’s range. This makes it highly useful even in areas where charging infrastructure is lacking. Hyundai plans to provide consumers with high driving convenience through its EREV vehicles, and by reducing battery capacity by about 30%, it plans to ensure price competitiveness against EVs in the same class. When mainly on the highway, it gets 10km per liter, which is a bit of a rare gas.
By the way, e-power also gets better fuel economy on regular roads (suburban areas) than on the highway.
