The growth rate of same-store sales at Seven-Eleven Japan, Japan’s largest convenience store operator, is sluggish. One reason for this is thought to be that as rising prices have made consumers more frugal, the company’s focus on high-end products such as “Seven Premium Gold” has backfired, spreading the impression that its products are overpriced. The slowdown in growth is clear compared to rivals Lawson and FamilyMart. Parent company Seven & i Holdings has received an acquisition proposal of over 7 trillion yen from Canadian convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard. Increasing the stock price is essential to defend against a takeover, but the sluggish growth of the company’s core business, Seven-Eleven, is likely to be a cause for concern. According to monthly business information released by Seven & i Co., Ltd. for January to November 2024, Seven-Eleven’s same-store sales fluctuated between a decrease of 0.6% and an increase of 0.6% compared to the same month last year each month, with the average growth rate over the 11 months remaining flat. Seven-Eleven is trying to make a comeback by expanding its product lineup to sell value for money, and sales have been on the rise since October. Even if December shows a large increase, the growth rate for 2024 is likely to be significantly lower than the 3.6% increase in 2023. 12/30 (Mon) 15:55 Kyodo News Trends in the rate of increase/decrease in existing store sales at Seven-Eleven Japan 2024/12/30 (Mon) 21:28:31.28.
>>4 These days, department store bentos are overwhelmingly more cost-effective. I was shocked to see the 1000 yen Wagyu bento and 2300 yen eel bento at 7-Eleven lol. Know your place. Well, they’ve started a low-price strategy, but will they be able to keep up?
Well, Seven-Eleven has been trying hard recently to offer bento boxes in the 300 yen range, so I’ve been going there more often. On the other hand, Lawson is expensive.
I bought squid shichimi at Family Mart, it was about the size of your palm and it was all stuffed inside. I happened to stop by Seven-Eleven to buy a magazine, and they had a similar grilled squid, so I bought it. It was the same palm-sized size, but half of the surface was hidden by the product photo. When I opened it at home, there was a little bit of mayonnaise underneath the photo, and the squid was only on the half that was visible. I was amazed at how much effort they would put into deceiving their customers.
I went to Family Mart for the first time in a while and the selection was good. In my neighborhood, Family Mart, Seven, and Lawson have the best selection in that order.
