[Automobile] Two sisters, ages 7 and 5, died in an accident in the back seat of a car despite being fastened by seat belts. Why the car became a “deadly weapon.”
※Published 9/1 (Sun) 12:00 Friday Did the man die because he was using his seat belt? A light passenger car collided with a route bus. Two sisters, ages 7 and 5, who were sitting in the back seat, died. At around 11:00 a.m. on August 18, a head-on collision occurred between a light passenger vehicle (Suzuki Wagon R Smile, hereafter referred to as Wagon R) and a Nishitetsu bus on a national highway in Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The Wagon R ran into the center lane, and the impact killed two girls, ages 7 and 5, who were riding in the back seat of the Wagon R. According to local broadcasting stations such as FBS Fukuoka, the cause of the girl’s death was reported to be “a strong blow to the abdomen.” The mother, who was driving, suffered serious injuries to her leg but was not in any danger of dying, and no passengers on the bus were injured. This fact made the sadness even deeper. The author has previously conducted original interviews and written articles about accidents in which children are killed or seriously injured while riding in vehicles. “The baby was using a junior car seat, but the belt dug into his stomach, causing internal injuries and death” “The baby was using a child car seat, but the harness was too loose, causing the baby to fall to the floor and die”
We have written about accidents where people died despite using child car seats, but they have never been covered by as many media outlets as this accident was. What was widely reported this time was that two little girls died despite being wearing seat belts, a symbol of safety. So why did he die “even though he was using his seat belt”? The death occurred “because” the driver was using a seat belt. Seat belts are designed to be safe for people over 150cm tall, so it is extremely dangerous to restrain a child using only a seat belt if they are shorter than that. It is this safety equipment that can become a deadly weapon, as in this accident. The full details of the accident have yet to be revealed, but based on the facts that have emerged so far and the statements of those involved, it is highly likely that “the girl was not over 150 cm tall, but was instead fastened with a seat belt and not in a junior car seat.” Continue reading below.
>>1 >The mother, who was driving, suffered serious injuries to her leg but was not in any danger of dying, and no passengers on the bus were injured. This fact made the sadness even deeper. It seems like it would have been better if the passengers on the bus had died as well, what an amazing article. Normally, it would be written that it was a blessing in disguise, and that no passengers on the bus were injured… but…
Whether they were using a seatbelt or not, the stupid parents who drove into oncoming traffic were the cause of the whole thing. Why are you trying to change the subject?
>>14 Seat belt covers are available for around 500 yen, so that’s fine. They want to sell those damn expensive child seats, so they don’t promote the use of seat belt covers, which are much better than nothing.
The seat belt would have dug into his stomach and he would have died from internal injuries. If he hadn’t been wearing a seat belt, the force of the impact would have traveled around the car and hit the front seat or windshield, so he would have been dead either way.
Seat belts are only meant to reduce the death rate, but wearing a seat belt does not mean you won’t die. The child in this case died from internal organ rupture, but if he hadn’t been wearing a seat belt he might have been thrown out of the car and died instantly.
>>So why did he die “even though he was using his seat belt?” The death occurred “because” the driver was using a seat belt. I feel like this is the author’s hatred for not having his/her side of the story accepted up until now. If he/she hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt, he/she would have been thrown out of the seat and died, so it’s wrong to say he/she died because he/she was wearing a seatbelt. There are probably tons of cases where people have survived in similar accidents because of seatbelts.
>>28 Actually, Takata’s engineers say that 4 points or more is best. It would be best to have the same inertia system, but since it’s a commercially available car, comfort can’t be neglected in the end.
>>35 When I watched the video of the accident, I saw that he was going pretty fast, so if he hadn’t been wearing his seat belt, he would have hit the windshield or broken through it.
If the car crossed into the opposite lane, the mother who was driving must not have looked ahead for at least 2 seconds. Her animal senses must have been broken, or her information processing ability must have been significantly impaired.
