US reaction continues… Shohei Ohtani’s act of brushing off dirt is controversial as an “obscene gesture” → Some counter that “I’m shocked at his vulgar thinking”
Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani played as “first batter and designated hitter” in an away game against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 10th (July 11th Japan time). The “act” of Ohtani brushing off dirt from his base running glove caused controversy in the US MLB scene as an “X-rated gesture”, and the reaction has expanded further, with comments mocking the illegal gambling allegations by a former interpreter and denying his character.
In the top of the first inning, after hitting a double, Ohtani removed the glove from his left hand, stood up, and while looking toward the dugout, he vigorously moved his right hand forward and backward near his groin.
It may have been an “unintentional act” on Ohtani’s part to brush off the dirt from his glove, but it gave the wrong impression to the US MLB scene.
Regarding Ohtani’s incident in the top of the first inning, the US media “New York Post” reported in an article titled “Shohei Ohtani displays strange celebration after stealing second base” that “Ohtani continued to stand on second base with two outs as if nothing had happened, but ESPN did not mention this strange celebration at all and cut it from the replay of the stolen base,” reporting that major media outlets were avoiding the scene.

Furthermore, it reported that “the umpire who called Shohei Ohtani safe seemed to have seen exactly what Ohtani was doing, and there was a strange scene where he looked away awkwardly.”

Furthermore, the reaction from US MLB fans on the Internet continued. “It’s insulting…” “I’m really confused as to whether he’s doing something crazy or just a ’prank’” “Does it mean something different in Japan?” Critical messages and confused voices were raised, and even comments denying his personality erupted.

However, on the other hand, there are also comments defending Ohtani, such as “Everyone, calm down, he just arrived in this country and was just brushing dirt off his glove,” “He was just brushing dirt off his glove…,” and “I’m shocked at the vulgarity of his thinking,” and the “actions” of superstar Shohei Ohtani while playing are causing widespread unrest.

Is the average American’s standard for obscene material about that of a fifth grader?

I thought they were going to bash Ohtani again, but when I watched the video,
his movements were even stranger than I expected.

I wonder if people who imagine lewd things from that really only have erotic thoughts running through their heads?

If he said something like that to a female athlete, it would cause outrage, but this discrimination against men is too severe.

There are some poses that are OK in Japan but not allowed overseas.

People said it was obscene, or was it a provocation to the catcher who couldn’t catch the stolen base at first? But I don’t think he’s that kind of character.

More than that, Otani’s usual self-judgment of a safe seems to leave a bad impression.

There are people who keep repeating this over and over again, but there are plenty of others who do the same thing and it’s not a problem.

Is it not allowed to remove dirt from gloves overseas?

I also want them to stop making silly gestures on the bases when they get a hit.

I totally agree!
Why would he do something so childish?
It would look childish and he’d lose fans.
Not only Ohtani, but Japanese pro baseball players often do that kind of performance.

That’s not important, but after you hit the ball you make a quick pose, right?

What does that mean?

It’s childish and I feel a bit uncomfortable seeing that.

It’s not something a grown adult should do.

What are you talking about?
It was explained at the start of the season.
Kike Hernandez was doing it, so the team decided to go with the Dragon Ball fusion pose.
So everyone was doing it, but you’re only seeing Ohtani?
