Following the August riots in the UK, in which police dogs were injured while trying to quell violence, animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has submitted a petition to the Metropolitan police calling for the phasing out of the use of dogs. British media reported. According to Peta, police dogs were hit with bricks, strangled and set on fire by rioters. There have been cases in the past where people have been left inside police vehicles and died of heatstroke. The petition states, “Unlike human police officers, dogs have not chosen to risk their lives,” and asks that “technology should be used instead of animals.” Source: Sankei Shimbun.
