School trips: Let’s reconsider the classic “Kyoto”… Avoiding crowds due to the increase in visitors to Japan, diversifying destinations to Hokuriku and Tohoku
2024/10/16 15:00 Yomiuri Shimbun
Due to the increase in foreign visitors to Japan and the weak yen, school trips for junior high and high school students are starting to change. There has been a movement to avoid the usual destinations of “Kyoto” and overseas travel. Survey results also showed that half of the schools are considering alternative destinations, so school trips are likely to become more diverse. “We can no longer visit popular shrines and temples like we used to,” said Yutaka Mitamura (64), principal of Kamiyugi Junior High School in Hachioji, Tokyo, as he reflected on the city of Kyoto, which he visited on a school trip in September. Long lines formed at bus stops, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine were thronged with visitors to Japan. According to a 2023 survey by the National School Trip Research Association, 90% of public junior high schools in the Kanto region conducted school trips to the Kinki region. However, 54% said they would like to consider other school trip destinations in the future, citing Hokuriku or Tohoku as examples. One reason for this is thought to be that crowded tourist destinations have forced students to reduce the number of places they can visit, meaning they can no longer expect the same learning benefits as before. *Click the link for the full text.

I went to Kyoto and Osaka on a school trip, but it was boring as hell.
Osaka stinks, and there are stupid-looking adults wandering around the city in the middle of the day. It’s a shame for Japan, I think.

I don’t think there are many kids these days who would go to Tokyo or Kansai for their first school trip.
If you’re just making school memories, I think it’s fine to go somewhere nearby.

If you’re Japanese, you’d probably rather go to Momoyama Imperial Mausoleum than Fushimi Inari.

Kagoshima and Yamaguchi should go to Nagaoka, Aizu and Wakamatsu and apologize for their atrocities!

Junior high school students would probably find it boring and uninteresting to visit the shrines and temples of Kyoto.

Foreign tourists >>> school trip students
This country is finished.

Basically, hotel prices have skyrocketed, and the burden on parents is enormous. Thank you, United LDP. Thank you, weak yen.

If you start to become more aware of death as a reality, it might be worth visiting Nara and Kyoto, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for middle and high school students to go.

Kyoto and Nara are standard in Tokyo, but I wonder where the closest place to Kyoto and Nara is. Aichi is close, and maybe from the east side of Shizuoka. On the other hand, Kyushu and Toyama in Hokuriku are a bit tricky.

I wonder if there are still schools that choose foreign countries as travel destinations.

Right. Kyoto and Nara are places you should visit at least once in your life. Depending on your cultural capital, you may never go there.

Kiyomizu-dera looked completely different when I visited it on a school trip than when I visited it after I turned 30. Even a child can’t see even half of its beauty.

Kanazawa is compact, so I think it’s fine to plan your own trips.
Fukui has poor transportation access, so if you’re going around, you’ll probably want to do it as a group.
