Teikoku Databank announced on the 24th that Funai Electric (Daito City, Osaka Prefecture), which manufactures “FUNAI” brand TVs and other products, received a decision from the Tokyo District Court to start bankruptcy proceedings on the same day. The total amount of debt is currently under investigation, but as of the end of March 2024 it was approximately 46.1 billion yen. In addition to the slump in its television business, a problem with unpaid advertising fees by a hair removal salon chain that was part of the group has led to widespread concerns about the company’s creditworthiness, making it difficult to see any prospects for a recovery. Founded in 1951, Funai Electric manufactured televisions and video imaging equipment, and expanded its business by selling televisions at low prices through OEM (original equipment manufacturer) methods. In the fiscal year ending March 2005, sales reached 353.5 billion yen, but the company gradually lost market share to Chinese companies which gained an advantage in price competition, and losses became the norm. In 2021, it was acquired by publishing company Hidewa System and became a subsidiary. In order to rebuild, Funai Electric established Funai Electric Holdings in 2011, moved to a holding company system, and acquired Musee Platinum, a hair removal salon operator, but sold it after about a year. The company had just recently revamped its management structure with the retirement of President Tomokazu Ueda in September of this year.
