(AFP) – Brazilian police on October 23 arrested more than 250 supporters of Uruguay’s opposing football club Ca Penarol following riots before the local club Botafogo FR’s Copa Libertadores 2024 semi-final match. Police said Peñarol supporters vandalised and looted shops and vehicles in downtown Rio de Janeiro. A fire engine was dispatched to extinguish the burning vehicle and a gun was also seized. Television stations showed Peñarol supporters hurling bottles and other objects at police, and at least one bus was set on fire. A 34-year-old local shop owner said: “They are here to cause trouble. It’s very sad.” Riots have broken out near Libertadores matches in Rio before, and international supporters have repeatedly complained about excessive police force. In 2019, dozens of people were arrested after a brawl on one of the city’s beaches, and one person was injured and later died. Last year, large numbers of supporters clashed on Copacabana beach. Peñarol is one of the most successful clubs in the Libertadores, having won numerous trophies. (c)afpbb news.

As the world’s number one sport, it’s great to see it in the news all over the world.
As a very minor leisure activity, we need to start by raising awareness of its existence.
