With the House of Representatives election voting approaching on October 27th, candidates are becoming more and more fired up. Amidst all this, there is one camp that is showing a unique level of excitement… The candidate is Masafumi Tabuchi (66), who ran as an independent in Tokyo’s 26th district. [Part 1 of 2]
Tabuchi is a doctor who serves as the director of a clinic in Tokyo. He first ran for office in 2016, and although he has never been elected, he has been endorsed by the Party of Hope and the Japan Restoration Party. The clothing of the female volunteers helping him with his election campaign has sparked controversy. “There were glamorous looking women handing out flyers, but their clothes were quite revealing. The woman, wearing a miniskirt that was more than 30cm above her knees, was in a “half-butt” state, with the lower half of her hips already visible.
On the Internet, there was a flurry of criticism, with people saying, “This is too vulgar for creating a buzz,” and “Voters should be angry that they are being mocked.” (National newspaper political reporter)
On October 25th, the news Post Seven team visited Tabuchi, who was giving a street speech in Nakameguro. Few people stopped to listen to the speech, with only about 10 people in the audience. On top of the campaign car were Mr. Tabuchi and three young women wearing yellow jumpers. The women are standing right next to Mr. Tabuchi, but they do not appear to be particularly close, and they do not appear to be exchanging words.
