A 46-year-old man who runs a recycling business that deals in model guns was arrested at his home in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, for possessing a handgun and gunpowder for firing it. The man denies the charges, saying he “thought it was a model gun.” The suspect arrested on suspicion of violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law and the Explosives Control Law is Koichi Nonaka (46), a recycling worker who lives in Hakata Minami, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Nonaka is suspected of possessing one automatic pistol and about 4 grams of gunpowder contained in nine live bullets at his home south of Hakata Station in Hakata Ward in July of this year. In July of this year, when the Akita Prefectural Police searched Nonaka’s home in connection with a separate case, they discovered and seized a handgun and other items. Subsequent examination revealed that the gun did not have any firing capabilities like real ammunition, but it was determined to be genuine, leading to Nonaka’s arrest. Nonaka was dealing in model guns as a product, and denied the charges when questioned, saying, “I thought it was a model gun that couldn’t fire bullets.” Police plan to continue investigating the route of acquisition.
