Choshi fisherman catches 50 tons of saury, “the biggest catch in years”…signs of improvement in poor catches since 2019
2024/11/04 10:53 Yomiuri Shimbun
On the 2nd, 50 tons of saury were landed for the first time this year at Choshi Fishing Port in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture. Despite the continuing record low catch of saury, the amount landed on this day far exceeded the annual catch for the past three years. The port is buzzing with activity as a large amount of fish has been landed for the first time in a long time. The catch was landed by the saury fishing boat “Denmaru No. 37” (167 tons), belonging to the Choshi City Fisheries Association. The saury were caught in the high seas east of Aomori Prefecture between October 29th and 31st, and the fish mainly weighed between 100 and 110 grams. It was traded at 276 yen to 489 yen per kilogram. According to the National Pacific Saury Pole Net Fisheries Cooperative, the national saury catch, which was 343,225 tons in 2008, plummeted to 40,517 tons in 2019, and further to 17,910 tons in 2022. Although it recovered slightly last year, it still only reached 24,433 tons. The annual catch at Choshi Fishing Port was 18 tons in 2021, but ended up being “zero” in 2022. In 2011, the amount remained at 11 tons. But there are signs of improvement this year. According to a summary by the Fisheries Information Service Center, a general incorporated association, as of October 10, Japanese fishing boats’ saury catch was 16,761.2 tons, significantly exceeding the 7,589.7 tons from the previous year. Although the catch remains at a low level, it is the highest since the saury shortage began in 2019. *Click the link for the full text.

Really?
I’ll buy it when saury gets cheaper.

They probably catch too many every year, which is why there are fewer saury.
And I wish they’d stop selling them at ridiculously low prices just because they caught a big catch. Nationwide.

However, don’t get carried away and catch too much.

They look small, but perhaps they plan to hunt them all down until they become extinct?
6Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:45:05.44ID:/BK67UZZ0
Maybe China has changed what they’re fishing for, and now they’re off the coast of Brazil?

Taiwan has the largest catch of saury in the world.
8Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:45:24.72ID:GxHQEtYk0
This will only exacerbate the poor catches.
9Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:46:12.98ID:rso22u400
I’m skinny, but is that okay?
11Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:46:26.74ID:6+vOixAf0
I’ll pick as much as I can.

I grew up on delicious, safe treated water from Fukushima.

However, we need to leave some for future fishery resources.

If the conditions are right, small fish can multiply explosively, reaching numbers in the hundreds of millions.

Then sell them for less than 100 yen each.

Sanma usually sells for 50 or 70 yen
This price is crazy.

Migratory fish I visited the nearby seas for the first time in a while.

If you don’t take as much as you can now, you don’t know when you’ll be able to get more, so keep taking.

They just changed their fishing grounds. Taiwan, the main player in overfishing, has seen its catch increase.
23Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:48:51.88ID:tEEbEndH0
I’ve eaten them about 10 times this season, hoping to release the frustrations of the past few years, but they were all skinny and far from the pacific saury I had that day.
25Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:49:18.72ID:VswvSJ4e0
I see news like this, but the prices at my local supermarket aren’t cheap at all.

In the end, shipping costs are high, so it’s only cheap in nearby areas.
26Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:49:34.76ID:/J1bECbg0
Isn’t this year’s pacific saury thin and oily?
In the past, they were plump and juicy even when grilled.
28Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:49:57.78ID:zxWlUHRA0
Apparently, when the sea temperature rises, blue fish lose weight…
30Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:50:18.93ID:9URcVvLw0
I had Sanma rice. It’s been a while since I last had it, it’s so good.
31Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:50:25.46ID:vxPhaWio0
It’s probably because China and South Korea have stopped taking it because it’s contaminated water.
32Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:50:45.48ID:tEEbEndH0
Today’s saury is a subspecies compared to 10 years ago.
33Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:50:59.62ID:UGX6w9j60
Unless you can eat it as sashimi in time, it can’t be called an improvement. The only thing we can do is build a pacific saury aircraft carrier.
36Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:52:05.70ID:v7+qcbv80
Sanma has gotten thinner (´・ω・`).
38Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:52:10.26ID:MLMSU+qG0
I guess you take too much and then you can’t remove it anymore lol.
40Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:52:33.77ID:/h6Gi1as0
At Ootoya, a two small pacific saury set meal was 1400 yen, more expensive than a salmon set meal.
41Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:52:52.79ID:qqm2kIB70
I don’t think overfishing has much to do with it. The squid just moved north to spawn near the mouth of the Amur River.
42Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:52:58.63ID:MK9U+kHy0
The first time I ate it, my mom didn’t remove the innards, so she put the innards in my mouth first. It was so bitter that I haven’t eaten it since.

I went to Ootoya because I wanted to eat grilled salted saury, but the saury was so small that they only sold a set of two. They were really small, the kind that are dried in mirin. I wonder where all the big, well-shaped saury go; I don’t think high-class restaurants serve saury.
49Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:53:29.85ID:RqmrSYzn0
These days, saury is expensive, and too many of them are thin and untasty.

Yeah, saury used to be fatty and tasty
These days it’s all skinny and not tasty at all.
57Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 4, 2024 (Mon) 13:55:24.51ID:yJuuIYqm0
This year’s catch doesn’t seem bad, but the fish are still thin and not tasty. It might be good for canning and other processing.
