An in-depth look at a Chinese group that “bought up 4.5 million yen worth of Disney goods” “Reselling will never stop, especially in Japan”

breaking news

In Japan, resale issues persist as scalpers buy limited items and inflate prices. Okukubo’s book explores the “good” and “bad” reselling, highlighting the need for urgent measures.

“I wonder if the fact that resale is so much of an issue is a phenomenon unique to Japan.” These are the words of freelance writer Okukuba Yuki, who pursues so-called “scalpers” who buy up popular items and then resell them at inflated prices. He recently published a book called “The Dark Economics of Resellers” (Shinchosha). In Japan, whenever a limited edition Hello Kitty product is released, Japanese and foreigners line up to buy it all up with the intention of reselling it. The incident then gets covered on a television news program. This is the usual scene. In the past, it has been pointed out that reselling can result in products not reaching those who really want them. When considering measures to combat resale, we should also look at why resellers are so targeted in Japan. ● Walking 14km a day to “buy” with a Chinese resale group at Disneyland
Even after the mask resale boom during the COVID-19 pandemic calmed down, Okukubo felt that the resale of various products was “expanding as a business,” and so he continued his research. A Chinese woman living in Japan bought up 9 million yen worth of merchandise at an event featuring figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu. A Japanese man made a huge profit by selling rare liquor he purchased from a department store’s sales representative. A young college student who, with no knowledge whatsoever, decides to make a living by reselling and becomes obsessed with the business. The book features people involved in resale and many of the products that are resold. When Okukuba accompanied a group of Chinese people who were “buying” merchandise at Disneyland and DisneySea, the group walked 14 kilometers in one day, carrying 15 kilogram bags bulging with stuffed toys and other items. Also, from the perspective of the resellers, they realized that there were multiple groups of resellers engaging in similar behavior within the park. Although this was before the event management had taken certain measures, they purchased merchandise worth a total of about 4.5 million yen, which they sold to make a profit of 20-30%. ●Chinese international student: “Reselling will never go away. “Especially in Japan,” Okukubo explains, “there is good reselling and bad reselling.” For example, unearthing rare books from the used bookstore district of Jimbocho, selling them at auctions, and having them purchased by collectors is a good example of reselling. The buying up of tickets at Disney mentioned earlier is an example of “bad reselling.” “Finding something buried in the market and giving it to someone who wants it is a good way to resell. Bad reselling occurs when the involvement of resellers makes it difficult for people who really want the item to obtain it. Another way of saying it is bad reselling is when someone feels bad. “Selling tickets for concerts and other events where the capacity is fixed and the number cannot be increased is particularly malicious,” he said, pointing out that such resale activity will likely continue to thrive in the future. It has a strong “social evil” aspect, with price gouging and products not reaching fans. Measures are urgently needed. A young Chinese student who was part of a resale group targeting Disney reportedly said the following. “Resale will never disappear from the world. In Japan, where reselling is considered bad, there are plenty of business opportunities. There aren’t many people who want to do it.”
(omitted)
He also mentioned the unexpected risks of reselling. The gap between rich and poor is widening, and young people and mothers with young children are turning to “illegal part-time jobs.” “People who are forced to queue up for resale are sometimes forced to sign smartphone contracts. This is also one of the illegal part-time jobs. I have not heard of them taking part in any robberies, but I can point out that reselling is a gateway to illegal part-time work.”

If you want Disney goods, buy them all there.

Is there good and bad reselling? You idiot.
The example you gave as a good one is the original meaning of reselling.

You don’t need to buy that stuff, they’re professionals at making things in their own country. Don’t underestimate the Chinese, they can make anything.

>Unearthing rare books in the used book district of Jimbocho,
>selling them at auctions,
>and having collectors buy them is “good reselling.”
But buying them cheaply from people who don’t know they have value and then selling them at a higher price to collectors seems like “bad reselling.”
It’s fine as long as they take a reasonable margin.

I think it’s reasonable since the seller didn’t bother to check the value.
Unless they cheated and bought it cheap.

I sell toys I bought as a kid. Sometimes I sell them for like 70,000 yen each. They’re 40 years old. They’re not made anymore, and I was lucky with my things.

Isn’t the problem that they are all selling things at a discount that could be sold at a higher price than the current price?
Isn’t it a bad sales tactic to create a sense of premium quality or scarcity?

4.5 million yen isn’t really buying up, it’s just buying in bulk.
Buying up until there’s no stock left should be called buying up.

It makes me angry, but it’s not going to go away if this Chinese student is right, and if they ignore their sense of ethics, this is only an opportunity. Although we may not want to admit it, these are the people who are proactive and take risks to make money. The foolish Japanese will continue to suffer in the future. Soon there will be an increase in Japanese people being employed in illegal purchasing jobs.

All Japanese people need to do is spend 4.5 million yen on shopping at Disneyland. They’re poor, so they can’t complain if Chinese people buy everything up.

First of all, could you physically buy 9 million yen worth of Yuzuru Hanyu merchandise on the spot? How much is that?
29Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:36:35.33ID:JoVz9LwZ0
I wanted a Mario coat, so even though I’m an old guy, I bought a Hazupi set at McDonald’s. I’m clearly unemployed and non-regular, so they probably thought I was a scalper, not a kid.
30Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:37:23.14ID:iAA86p8z0
Instead of going round second-hand bookstores and searching patiently, it’s now an easy way to buy up all the limited edition items that have just been released.
33Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:38:43.91ID:XfE4nP2z0
For people living in rural areas or those who can’t afford to line up, scalpers are like helpers who line up on their behalf for items that are only available in stores and can only be purchased by lining up in person.
34Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:39:23.69ID:EoWjodlb0
Would it be possible to prevent this by requiring people to register if they were able to resell items for more than the retail price?

Buying up everything at Disney is “bad reselling”
I don’t think that’s true
It’s good reselling because it allows people who can’t go to Disney to get their hands on the goods.
40Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:40:57.70ID:qM0oWVy30
I think scalpers will take big losses and go out of business, but people trying to make money from reselling will keep appearing, so reselling won’t go away. Chinese people love to hoard, so in China, stupid things have happened, like local governments seizing the raw materials for cold medicines. They probably thought that the raw materials for cold medicines would sell for a high price because of the coronavirus pandemic.
43Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:43:10.67ID:BwXarux30
We have to stop using limited-edition sales methods. There are too many limited-edition sales methods in Japan.
44Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:43:16.44ID:XfE4nP2z0
Toilet paper and the recent rice hoarding are bad reselling, while limited edition goods are good reselling.
47Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:43:43.80ID:I+vkahst0
If Disney sells a lot, the problem will be solved. Chinese people will stock up on the goods, and general customers will be able to get them.

If there are customers, business is viable. For people from outside, Disneyland in particular is expensive just to get in, with transportation, admission fees, and accommodation.
53Anonymous Donburako.Nov. 18, 2024 (Mon) 10:47:26.81ID:YLeNaP+w0
It’s partly a problem with the scalpers’ manners, but if the store doesn’t do anything about it, then it’s Disney’s problem.
