Beef-eating culture is “irregular” for Japanese people
The price of gyudon, which can be said to be the national dish of the Japanese, continues to rise. As of July 2024, a regular-sized beef bowl at Yoshinoya sells for 468 yen, at Sukiya it sells for 430 yen, and at Matsuya it sells for 430 yen (all prices include tax in-store). Considering that it is common for ramen to cost around 1,000 yen these days, beef bowls can still be said to be on the cheap side. However, looking back, around 2013, all companies were offering a regular-sized beef bowl (beef rice) for around 280 yen. In other words, the price of beef bowls has increased by nearly 50% over the past 10 years. Of course, prices overall have been rising during this period, but looking at the Consumer Price Index (overall) published by the government, the increase over the past 10 years has only been around 11 points. This means that the price increase for beef bowls will be particularly large. Why is the price rise of gyudon (beef bowls) unstoppable now? Following on from the first part, “Beef bowls disappear from Japan due to China’s buying spree… The root cause of the price rise of the “friend of the common people” is the soaring “fight over beef,” we looked into the reasons behind this. The rise in the price of beef bowls, a national dish, is a regrettable situation. However, if you think about it carefully, the fact that beef dishes have been offered at such low prices up until now could have been an “irregular” situation in the first place. As is well known, it is only very recently that Japanese people have started eating beef on a daily basis. Since the ban on eating meat was enacted in the 7th century, there has not been a culture of eating beef in Japan, at least not generally. However, during the Meiji period, under government leadership, a Western-style food culture that included the consumption of beef and dairy products began to spread. This was because Japan was actively seeking to adopt Western culture in order to repeal the unequal treaties it had concluded with Western countries at the end of the Edo period. It’s a long article, so please refer to the source.

Other restaurants are also increasing their prices, so gyudon is on the cheap side.
The other day, I ordered gyudon at Sukiya and had to wait more than 15 minutes.
There were only four customers there.
One of them got angry because they had to wait so long and left.

Just don’t eat it. I only go to a gyudon restaurant once every few years. It’s tastier and cheaper to make it yourself.

If you add more meat, a regular serving costs around 600 yen. No matter how cheap it is, if there’s only a little bit of meat, it’s pointless.

50% off sounds amazing, but let’s not forget that 280 yen was an insane price even at the time lol. It was triggered by the 290 yen war started by Matsuya. It was around 400 yen before that, so that’s a fair price now.

I think that around 1990, a beef bowl at Yoshinoya was 400 yen
I thought that was insanely cheap
Then, the Japanese economy went into a recession and deflation caused prices to fall steadily,
but with small quantities being 70% imported, there’s a limit
After all, while the Japanese economy was stalling, prices around the world have risen by about double.
