The spread of the new coronavirus is spreading again. Although it has become more difficult to see the infection situation since the category was changed to Category 5, the number of infections in Tokyo has been increasing for 12 consecutive weeks, and the same trend is seen nationwide. Amid this, a tweet saying that the aftereffects of COVID-19 had made him “dumb” became a hot topic. This condition, known as “brain fog,” is characterized by a feeling of fog in the head, which literally impairs judgment and thinking ability. We will explain the reality of this dreaded brain fog, its causes, and how to deal with it. ◼The terrifying reality of brain fog
“I’ve been acting stupid for about a year, so I went to a big hospital for a variety of tests and found out that I’ve been suffering from symptoms of decreased blood flow to the brain and becoming stupid for about a year, so I was officially branded as an idiot,” a post by x became a hot topic. It has long been known that this “brain fog” is caused by brain diseases, but since the latter half of 2020 to around 2021, it has also been discovered to occur as an aftereffect of COVID-19. As in this post, an increasing number of patients are complaining of a decline in cognitive function after contracting COVID-19. According to a survey conducted in Tokyo in 2023, one in four people who tested positive for COVID-19 suffered from after-effects of the virus, and of those, about 7% suffered from a condition known as brain fog. We asked patients who have actually experienced brain fog about their symptoms. “I was infected with COVID-19 in the winter of 2023, and gradually began to become aware of a state of brain fog over the following spring and summer. It became commonplace for me to have a fuzzy head and be unable to concentrate, and to forget what I was doing while doing housework. What’s especially painful is not being able to remember conversations or events with family and friends. Sometimes I can’t express myself well in words, so I always excuse myself before meeting people. I can no longer do things that I was able to do before, and I feel bad that this has had an impact on the important people around me. The anxiety every day has caused me to have mental health problems.” (Man in his 20s) The symptoms vary from person to person, but the condition has such a big impact on daily life and work that not only those around them, but also the person themselves, do not know what to do, so many people suffer in secret. Inflammatory substances may damage various parts of the brain The cause of brain fog is not fully understood, but it is thought that a viral infection causes inflammatory substances to spread to the brain, which in turn causes secondary inflammation in the brain, resulting in brain damage. The areas that are damaged vary from person to person, and it is speculated that the symptoms of the disorder vary depending on the area that is severely damaged: taste disorders in the areas that sense smell and taste, brain fog in the areas that control cognitive functions, and temporary motor paralysis in the areas that control body movement. We spoke to Dr. Osawa Ryota, a psychiatrist and chairman of Kokoromi Medical Corporation, who treats patients with brain fog, about the types of patients who come to see him. “Many patients end up visiting psychosomatic medicine or psychiatry clinics via other medical departments, such as internal medicine or otolaryngology, and there are many cases in which their work is adversely affected. For example, there have been cases where managers in their 40s who are expected to perform at a high level have visited the clinic because they are unable to think or make decisions as they used to, such as not remembering the content of important meetings they attend, their ability to concentrate has decreased to about one-sixth of what it used to be, and they have difficulty reading and writing long texts.
You don’t need a vaccine because the virus is airborne anyway. However, it would be dangerous if you inhale so much virus that the tax-free allowances couldn’t keep up, so I’ll wear a mask even if it’s just a little comfort.
The cause of brain fog is not fully understood, but it is thought that a viral infection causes inflammatory substances to spread to the brain, which in turn causes secondary inflammation and damage to the brain. But that inflammatory substance is the spike protein, which is the main component of the vaccine, so if you’re unlucky, even the vaccine can cause it, and as a result, blood clots can clog the blood vessels in the brain, causing a cerebral infarction. In other words, it’s vascular dementia.
I’d like to know the percentage of heatstroke patients who wear masks. It’s not like you have to pay for it yourself if you get heatstroke while wearing a mask.
There’s someone like that at work. A manager who seems to have been using workcation a lot during the coronavirus pandemic and going out and having fun.
Corona and the corona vaccine are the same. Idiots who say it’s just a cold and anti-vaccine believers are on the same level. Corona is something you should not get involved with.
Coronavirus is just a cold, except that it is highly contagious, causes sore throats, and has a much higher chance of causing aftereffects. Even if you are infected, 70-80% of people will not suffer from aftereffects, so there’s no need to be scared.
