There was a discrepancy in the predicted path of Typhoon No. 9 between the South Korean and Japanese Meteorological Agencies. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the typhoon formed in the early hours of the 19th in the sea south of Okinawa, Japan. Although the typhoon is still weak, it is expected to gain strength further due to the high sea temperatures through which it passes. However, since the distance it will travel is short and there are air currents in the upper atmosphere that prevent the typhoon from developing, the chances of it becoming a super typhoon are low. Unlike the previous four typhoons, all of which headed toward Japan, Typhoon No. 9 is the first this year to head toward the Korean Peninsula. The typhoon’s path remains highly variable. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that the typhoon would pass over the sea west of Jeju Island late that afternoon, and weaken into a tropical depression over the sea west of Mokpo around midnight tomorrow (21st). Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency predicted that the typhoon would make landfall on the coast of South Jeolla Province, then pass through South Korea and move as far as South Hamgyong Province in North Korea. Meanwhile, Typhoon No. 9 is expected to create a path for the typhoon and further intensify the heat. Moon Il-joo, director of the Jeju National University Typhoon Research Center, said through YTN on the same day, “As autumn approaches, the position of the North Pacific high pressure system expands toward Korea as normal, and the atmospheric pressure distribution is such that the typhoon’s path opens to Korea. Even after Typhoon No. 9 hits Korea, the chances of the typhoon’s path opening to Korea in September and autumn seem quite high.” 2024.08.20 10:44 ※Related thread [NHK] Typhoon No. 9 formed near Miyakojima, expected to move north across the East China Sea [8/19] [Kamen Unida★] [Typhoon No. 9] Approaching Jeju Island, Korea = risk of heavy rain [8/20] [Bird★].
If you can’t accurately predict things like this, you’re still a long way from winning the Nobel Prize. Even meteorological agencies in Europe forecast typhoons in the Far East.
The typhoon’s path is important, but it looks like a linear rain band will form around Seoul after the typhoon. Koreans and North Koreans living in Japan should be worried about that too.
