The number of bicycle accidents caused by distracted riding is on the rise. According to the National Police Agency, there were a total of 295 accidents caused by using mobile phones while riding a bicycle in the five years from 2013 to 2017. On the other hand, between 2018 and 2022, the total number of cases was 454, an increase of approximately 1.5 times. Professor Shidoji Kazunori of Kyushu University’s Graduate School, who is an expert on traffic psychology, points out, “When driving, you need to pick up information about the direction you are going and your surroundings, but if you drive while looking at a screen, you won’t be able to pick up enough of the information you need.” Accidents are particularly common among young people, and of the 197 accidents caused by using mobile phones while riding a bicycle in 2023, more than 70% involved people in their 20s or younger.
