Nankai Trough Worst case scenario “Over 320,000 deaths” “Cannot say where at this point” Probability of a magnitude 8 earthquake occurring within one week of a major earthquake in the Nankai Trough is 0.5%.
*TBS TV Friday, August 9, 2024 21:00 On the evening of the 9th, an earthquake measuring a maximum seismic intensity of 6 occurred in Hyuga-Nada, Miyazaki Prefecture, and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a “Massive Earthquake Warning” for the first time. The government has stated that there is a higher-than-normal chance of another major earthquake occurring in conjunction with this one, and has urged people living on the Pacific coast from Kanto to Kyushu to “take disaster prevention measures over the next week.” What preparations should we make? The Nankai Trough is a depression on the seafloor that stretches along the boundary of plates from Suruga Bay to the Hyuga Nada Sea, where this earthquake occurred. Large earthquakes occur along the Nankai Trough at intervals of approximately 100 to 150 years. It has already been about 80 years since the last major earthquake, and a major Nankai Trough earthquake is expected to occur in the near future. If a massive earthquake were to occur along the Nankai Trough, strong shaking would be felt over a wide area from the Kanto region to Kyushu, and high tsunamis are expected along the Pacific coast from the Kanto region to Okinawa. If a “Great Nankai Trough Earthquake” were to occur, the Cabinet Office predicts that there is a possibility of a seismic intensity of 7 in parts of Shizuoka Prefecture through to Miyazaki Prefecture. In addition, it is expected that a wide area in the surrounding area will experience very strong shaking of between 6+ and 6- on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. In addition, after the earthquake, a tsunami is expected to reach a wide area. A large tsunami exceeding 10 meters is expected along a wide area of the Pacific coast from the Kanto region to Kyushu. Is that really all it takes? A capital earthquake would likely kill many more people. It’s estimated to be several tens of thousands of yen, but the negative side of a densely populated city would be massive secondary damage.
If you live in an area where an earthquake is expected to occur, don’t buy a house or condominium; if you die in the earthquake, you’ll be left with only a mortgage.
The distance from Kanto to Kyushu is so vast. In the first place, it was only Kanto that was hit by radiation and direct-hit earthquakes, making it impossible for living things to live, which is why they started calling it the Nankai Trough.
