※Yomiuri Shimbun 2024/07/12 22:54 At around 3:50 a.m. on the 12th, the northeast slope of Shiroyama, where Matsuyama Castle, an important cultural property in Midori-cho, Matsuyama City, is located, collapsed over an area of about 50 meters wide and 100 meters high, engulfing one wooden house. Three people believed to be residents, a man in his 90s, a woman in her 80s, and a man in his 40s, are missing, and the Ehime Prefectural Police and the city fire department are searching for them. According to the Matsuyama Regional Meteorological Observatory, the city observed 213 mm of rainfall in the two days up to the morning of the 12th, equivalent to one month’s worth of rain in an average July. The incident occurred in the center of the city, and the soil and sand flowed into a total of four buildings, including nearby apartment buildings and private homes. In the 15-story apartment building that was affected, the wet soil and sand is believed to have jumped up to the upper floors, and driftwood was found stuck on the balcony near the 7th floor. Masaki Honda (55), an office worker who lives on the seventh floor, looked shocked and said, “A tree had crashed into the balcony of the room next door, and the aluminum handrail had been bent.” Read more and see more images below ↓
The city decided to repair the retaining wall in September of that year, but repairing a road within a national historic site requires permission from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, which was only granted in May of this year.
I saw a photo and it looks like Matsuyama Castle will partially collapse the next time there’s a heavy rain. I don’t think they’ll be able to do any restoration work on the mountain.
I guess the apartment building that was hit by the driftwood was able to absorb some of the damage, so the casualties were limited to just one building. If it had been just single-family homes, it might have been even worse.

Recommended for families♪ From the balcony facing south, you can see the beautiful greenery of Shiroyama and feel a sense of openness☆ There are supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants in the surrounding area, so it’s convenient for daily life!!
>>25 You’re better off just looking at and taking pictures at Dogo Onsen. You’ll be much happier if you go to Kisuke no Yu in front of Matsuyama Station.
Matsuyama has a lot of flat land and the land prices are cheap, so I don’t understand why people choose to live in the disaster-prone area at the foot of the mountains.
The residential area right up to the bottom of the cliff is scary. I wonder if there used to be more trees planted there to prevent it from collapsing. I hope it doesn’t affect the castle’s foundations.
This is the perfect timing The regional revitalization project of the largest fashion festival in history, “Tokyo Girls Collection,” has arrived in Shikoku for the first time! “TGC Matsuyama 2024 by Tokyo Girls Collection” (TGC Matsuyama 2024) will be held at the Ehime Prefectural Budokan on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
>>38 Honestly, it’s hard to imagine that this property, which is next to a steep cliff exposed to forest and described as dangerous, would be unpredictable.
