[Penteli (Greece)/Athens, 12th Reuters] – Greece’s worst wildfires this year have broken out, and the blazes, fanned by the summer heat and strong winds, are approaching the capital, Athens. It is said that this is the first time in about 20 years that flames have come this close to Athens. According to authorities, the wildfire broke out around 3:00 pm (local time) on the 11th near Varnavas, 35 km north of Athens. A day after it started, the fire is still out of control, prompting the government to request assistance from the European Union. France, Italy and the Czech Republic are providing aircraft and fire brigades, while Spain, Cyprus and Turkey have also offered to help. The fire forced the evacuations of hundreds of people from at least 25 neighborhoods and three hospitals and caused power outages in parts of Athens. A fire brigade spokesman said 13 people were treated by rescue and medical staff for smoke inhalation, and two firefighters were treated for burns. No deaths have been reported at this time. Greece has traditionally been prone to forest fires in the summer, but climate change has led to rising temperatures and dry conditions, resulting in more frequent and intense forest fires. Maybe he’s angry about how the Olympic flame was handled?
He stored it in a lantern and blew it out at the end. It is taboo even to blow out the candles on the Buddhist altar.

The soil is poor, but in ancient times, too many trees were cut down, and the soil washed into the sea, exposing the white rocks that were the foundation.
Reforestation starts with the soil.
