A pest that eats away at crops and suddenly attacks people. There are significant risks associated with living things in Japan. However, for some reason, Vietnamese people living in Japan are hunting these creatures and eating and selling them. What is the reality of Vietnamese people living in Japan who lead such a “hunting lifestyle”? Reporter Yasuda Minetoshi takes a closer look!

■The natural enemy of the giant snail
In recent years, the topic of “living things” has been making waves in the news. For example, there is the damage caused by “invasive alien species” (such as the American crayfish) that spread to areas where they do not originally live due to artificial factors such as escaping from aquaculture farms, disrupting the ecosystem. In addition, due to the effects of environmental destruction and climate change, there are increasing cases of deer, wild boars, and other animals entering human living spaces and causing trouble. In recent years, damage to crops caused by birds and animals has amounted to 15 to 16 billion yen per year. However, there are people who secretly hunt, trade and eat these pests. They are foreign workers in Japan. In particular, technical trainees and bo doi (illegal residents and workers), many of whom come from rural areas of Vietnam, hunt and eat a variety of creatures. We investigated the reality of the “Vietnamese vs. pests” issue, which has not been visible to Japanese people until now. ***
“A dozen or so Vietnamese male and female technical intern trainees often take buckets and enter this reservoir to collect giant snails,” said Nadeshiko Penta, a biological survey coordinator, in early June this year in a rice field along the Genkai Sea in northwest Kyushu. In the agricultural water reservoir that he showed me, shocking pink eggs were scattered here and there, evidence of the reproduction of giant pond snails. The giant apple snail, also known as the apple snail, is a freshwater snail native to South America. The shell height is huge, reaching 50 to 80 mm, and although it is not closely related to snails, it looks very similar. The brightly colored eggs are also poisonous. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and local governments often announce the damage caused by giant pond snails, as they cause severe damage by eating rice seedlings immediately after planting. Their weakness is their susceptibility to cold, but in recent years, due to the effects of global warming, they have been able to survive the winter, mainly in western Japan, and are now breeding successfully. It is a typical invasive alien species that increases its population abnormally in environments where there are no natural predators, disrupting the ecosystem. 農作物を食い荒らし、突如、人を襲う有害生物。日本には生物にまつわる小さくないリスクがある。だが、そのような生物たちをなぜか在日ベトナム人が狩って、食べたり、売ったりしているらしい。そんな"狩猟生活"

That’s much more beneficial than the Koreans in Japan who hunt down and eat all the stray cats in their neighborhood.

Let’s treat these hunters as quasi-civil servants and hire them.

Please also take care of the bluegills. They’re an invasive species spread by villains.
0004Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:31:37.01ID:eUwqGxBa0
It’s going to be like a poison.

The red bumps left behind by the rice fields are so gross.

Farming seems like a hard job for people who hate bugs.
0009Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:33:28.51ID:lmoohRyM0
Can you eat giant snails?
0011Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:33:50.16ID:dEJocYdB0
They’re more like pests than vermin, eating everything from vegetables in the fields to livestock.
0013Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:34:44.78ID:r4LSsmRO0
Eating and selling them means that they benefit from the existence of the creatures, so it would be a problem if their numbers decreased, so they probably won’t be eradicated. In fact, they might even be scattered elsewhere.

I don’t think they’re going to lose food or livelihoods, so it’s possible that their numbers are actually increasing.
Unlike livestock, they’re wild, so they don’t need special care, so it’s probably easier.

If the demand is big enough.

・Snails……700 yen
・Wild boar meat……1100 yen
・Dog……1100 yen (out of stock)
Run away, dog!

Of course they wouldn’t just hunt harmful creatures, Vietnamese people are crazy.
0017Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:36:10.40ID:imSKmpYZ0(1/2)
There’s this ink-covered Nguyen hanging around the neighborhood in the middle of the day. I bet he’s a former intern, so why is he even allowed to stay there?

So they’re not technical interns, they’re Vietnamese who are actually employed by a company.
0018Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:36:25.56ID:iBS3of3Q0
I guess he’s just hunting them all indiscriminately.
0019Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:36:32.75ID:B7zlXaAP0
This is a good thing. Sometimes you can do good things, Nguyen.
0020Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:36:37.76ID:cz7sfXwn0
That’s fine as long as they’re only eating the invasive alien species,
but it’s obvious that they’ll soon be eating them all up and start eating the native species as well
We need to thin them out and adjust the situation.
0021Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:37:09.74ID:JqmAmMRE0
And then, for dessert, they pick pears and eat them, right? By the dozens.
0022Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:37:36.66ID:UMJoFXK50
You can probably get rid of mongooses with Nguyen too.
0026Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:38:47.66ID:HnZgVS8e0(1/2)
It may be the reason why bears have been coming down to human settlements recently. The illegal Nguyens, whose numbers are unknown, may be secretly becoming food and people have become accustomed to the taste.

> They eat up crops
Well, in my hometown, Vietnamese people come to pick Shine Muscat grapes in the middle of the night lol.

Unlike me, who gets diarrhea easily, Vietnamese people must have amazing intestinal conditions. I feel like I’m keeping a wild animal in my stomach. I have the impression that Chinese people dissolve things using poison.

I guess his experience training with the Viet Cong is coming in handy.
0035Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:42:53.39ID:Deiodw3e0
Is Nguyen the strongest invasive species?
0037Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:44:20.95ID:qevgvP9a0(2/3)
You’re writing in a way that praises Vietnamese people, but there are also illegal immigrants among them, and they are the ones who organize and steal livestock and crops.
0038Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:44:36.26ID:FAS2RNxZ0
Don’t talk like we’re “only” hunting down harmful species.

I’ve caught wild birds and stolen pets before.
0039Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:44:59.92ID:F33rpNEh0
Let’s move them to the depths of Hokkaido.
0042Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:46:05.34ID:Ge/ZIRB00
Thank you for removing the giant snails free of charge. I would also like to remove bullfrogs and nutrias.
0044Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:47:20.70ID:7mikquor0
The Viet Cong could even take a brown bear.
0053Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:50:39.90ID:pir+qjeo0
They are on equal footing with America and are fully independent.
0060Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:54:49.81ID:QWE5MVIP0
By the way, Kyon can eat it so let’s make a Chiba specialty dish.
0061Anonymous Donburako.Sep. 29, 2024 (Sun) 15:54:58.81ID:WQQHB2M30
If they eat pests, that’s beneficial. Let’s have them hunt bears.
