“Proof they’re taking breaking lightly” Murofushi Koji expresses dismay at “disrespectful remarks” made to gold medalist during courtesy visit to Prime Minister After returning home from the Paris Olympics, the Japanese team has been very busy. In particular, medalists from each sport have been busy making media appearances and visiting various relevant parties, but at one “meeting,” rude remarks were heard that seemed to belittle the athletes. On August 13th, 66 medalists visited the Prime Minister’s Official Residence. Yes, the so-called “courtesy visit,” a regular event for the Prime Minister after the Olympics, took place, and each athlete, including judo gold medalist Abe Hifumi, who presented a commemorative gift, met with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, posed for commemorative photographs, and had conversations with him. As the Sports Agency Director General Koji Murofushi acted as the “host” and introduced each medalist and explained their sport, the next person to take the stage was Yuasa Ami, also known as “ami,” the first gold medalist in the new sport of “women’s breaking.” “Ami is the breaking player. So…she became the first queen, but when you watch it, you see, she improvises a dance to the music. Well, I imagine it must be incredibly difficult even for an amateur to imagine, but what do you usually keep in mind when practicing to improvise dance? What kind of training are you undergoing? How is this going?”
Prime Minister Kishida’s questions were so sloppy that it was unclear whether he had actually watched or understood the sport, including the mistake of saying “breaking” right from the start. However, when he was given the microphone,
Murofushi suggested to the breaking ami,
“Yes, I’m the breaking ami. Well, breaking is like that. On the day, you don’t know what music will be played, plus you’re competing against other people, and you have to change your moves depending on your opponent, so everyone is fighting without knowing what will happen until the time comes. Personally, I see breaking as a form of self-expression, and it’s not just about winning or losing; it’s about putting your own dance on display on stage. I think that presenting yourself on that stage is probably the most important thing for everyone when they dance. When I practice, of course I’m with other people, but I also take the time to face myself, think about my strengths, and what I want to express, and practice while facing myself.”
Ami shares her thoughts about breaking with a smile. Amidst the applause, Director Murofushi made a suggestion. “Um, Prime Minister. Ami, if you’re good at improvisation, why don’t you do a little improvisation to lighten the mood, or maybe since you have some time, Ami?”
Ami then asked, “What if you and the Prime Minister…” and encouraged Prime Minister Kishida, who was sitting next to her, to do an “improvisation” dance together, but he replied,
“I’m sorry. I’m grateful for the applause, but I can’t dance in a suit, so I’d love to do it again if the opportunity arises. Excuse me! Thank you. Thank you very much.”
Ami firmly declines with a wry smile. Director Murobushi, who probably didn’t expect to be turned down, looked guilty and apologized, “I’m sorry!” The entire exchange was published in the online edition of Nikkan Sports with the headline: [Muro-fushiro Koji’s “unreasonable request” was gently ignored: “I’m wearing a suit…”], but in the comments section of Yahoo! News, there were comments such as:
The boss told the new recruit to “do a comedy routine” at a party
“Muro-fushiro probably didn’t mean any harm, but it seems he was taking it a little lightly. For example, you would never ask a world-famous musician or singer to “improvise and play (sing) something.” 》
《Telling people to dance and dance so casually is proof that they’re not taking breaking seriously. It’s not a show. Just pretend you’re throwing a hammer. 》
《It’s like when a boss gives a party to new recruits and they each get to do a comedy routine. There’s no obligation to do that. 》
《I was worried that a politician like that would be awful, but turns out he actually does exist, and it’s Murofushi… You can only play with confidence if you’re in the right place and wearing the right clothes. Playing under conditions where these aren’t met could end a player’s career. Anyone who truly loves sports would understand this. 》

Apparently, in Europe, following his performance at this year’s Olympics, there are calls for breaking to be removed from the Olympic Games…

It’s been decided that there won’t be any exclusions or anything in Los Angeles, and the chances of it being revived are low, right?

It’s improvisation so I don’t think it’s right to compare it to a performance, but Murofushi is really thoughtless.

It should end with Murofushi embarrassing himself. It’s just going to get bigger and bigger with criticism of AMI, criticism of breaking, and criticism of the Paris Olympics. It’s boring to see heartless people and critics who take advantage of this situation to make a fuss.

Even during the closing ceremony, people around her urged her to dance, but she stubbornly refused, saying, “Absolutely not!” Just when the mood started to turn sour, a male athlete volunteered to dance instead, which helped keep the atmosphere from becoming too tense.

I think it was good in the end because people who are good at power moves stand out more.

I believed that Murofushi was a former top athlete and is still able to think from an athlete’s perspective…
I suppose that changes when one’s position changes, and that’s true for everyone, but it’s kind of sad.

If they really want the host city, the organizers, and the athletes to all receive money and honor, they should reconsider all the events and make the Olympics more compact.
Maybe they should hold only two events for minor sports, like the 21st Century枠 at Koshien.

Although he was blessed with a good physique, Murofushi also grew up in a complicated family situation from an early age, and it seems he grew up without knowing how to distance himself from women, such as being estranged from his biological mother.

For him, it’s not that he’s taking it lightly, but rather that he is taking it lightly. As someone who has steadily climbed the ranks, gaining power and holding various posts since before he retired, I think the position of Prime Minister has a rather inflated reputation. That’s why Morimoto can continue to operate in secret for so long lol.

I watched the video and it wasn’t that great lol. Murofushi just mentioned it to lighten the mood in between breaks, but he wasn’t forcing it and it just went along smoothly and the atmosphere got lively. Kishida also didn’t emphasize the word “breaking” and the last “gu” was just audible, so it wasn’t worth a comment.
