What was the reason for not receiving child support on an ongoing basis? The survey was conducted online in August 2024 targeting 1,481 single parents aged 10 to 60 or older (guardians holding a “Single-Parent Family Medical Expenses Recipient Certificate”) who live in the Tokyo metropolitan area (mainly Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba), Kinki area (mainly Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Nara), and Kyushu area (mainly Saga and Fukuoka) and use the service. As a result, half of the respondents (50.3%) said they had “never received” child support, while only 19.6% said they “received a set amount every month in sufficient amount.” In addition, the top reasons for not receiving continuous child support were “the other party refuses to pay” (23.7%), “the other party has been financially unstable since the beginning of the separation” (22.5%), “the other party has subjected them to physical/mental violence or harassment and so they do not want to have anything to do with the other party” (16.5%), and “the other party has gone missing or unilaterally cut off contact” (14.3%). In addition, when asked “Why did you not make any arrangements for child support?” and “Why have you never directly approached the other party to make payments?” the most common answer for both was “I did not want to (did not have) any contact with the other party because I had been subjected to physical/mental violence or harassment” (26.0%, 32.2%). Next, we asked respondents “how much they receive per month (total amount if they have multiple children),” and about 60% answered “in the range of 10,000 to 50,000 yen per month.” When looking at the number of children under the age of 20 being raised, there are families where the amount received per child is less than 10,000 yen per month. Furthermore, regarding the amount of child support they are currently receiving, 41.7% of respondents said it was “too low to cover the costs of their child’s education and custody,” and 40.2% said it was “somewhat low.” In addition, when asked about “legal procedures” to claim child support, 77.7% responded that they had “never taken any steps.” The reason for this is (omitted) *See source for full text.
We should collect a single tax from single men over 40, who are the main cause of the declining birthrate, and distribute it to single-parent families.

I guess it’s important to thoroughly research the other person’s background beforehand in arranged marriages. Is the idea that love is the most important thing really the right answer?
The solution is to give custody to the other party. Rights and obligations come together. It’s a simple matter of there being no obligation to pay child support if there is no right of parental authority. If you demand only obligations without giving up rights, it’s only natural that the other party will refuse.
The government should shoulder about 50,000 yen per child in child support payments and collect this as tax from the father. Otherwise, poverty among single mothers will never be resolved.
I have some idiot brothers who haven’t paid either. They’re showing off how happy they are now that they’ve remarried, but it breaks my heart to think that behind the scenes their kids are suffering and unhappiness.
I was just thinking, if it were made mandatory to link accounts to My Number, wouldn’t it be easy to get child support from law-abiding people, even if they acted like they were bad? And compensation in general too?

It’s wrong for someone else to pay for him. First they should collect the money properly and make the father pay it. Then they can use tax money to provide subsidies.
