In April, SMBC Nikko Securities revamped its menstrual leave system for female employees into a “My Care Leave” system that covers both men and women for ill health caused by menopausal symptoms. The maximum number of days of vacation that can be taken has also been changed from the previous 1st of each month to 12 days per year, allowing for consecutive holidays. Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities has also introduced a leave system for employees due to menopause, and has received applications from men for the system. Honda, where about 90% of employees are male, has signed a contract with Cradle (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo), a company that provides healthcare services to corporations. For the past two years, the company has been offering online seminars on menopausal symptoms and services that allow women to visit medical institutions at discounted rates. Male menopause occurs due to a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone. Symptoms vary, including irritability, depression, and fatigue, but they can be difficult to distinguish from other ailments caused by aging or stress. In fact, according to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, only 10.1% of those in their 40s and 15.7% of those in their 50s responded that they were “well aware” that men also experience menopausal symptoms.
