When I went to Tsutaya for the first time in a while, I noticed that they had set up a reading space where you can read books in the store. Of course there are procedures, fees and restrictions.
I wish bookstores would work together instead. If you make it so that XX Bookstore in XX City specializes in medical specialist books, and △△ Bookstore in △△ Town specializes in Eastern European literature, you can have a better selection than Amazon. So, you can buy both of them mutually.
In fact, there are places that have been working together for a long time and still need to work together. I’ve also made a living by working at a bookstore near my school.
Libraries can buy books directly from the publishers. There is no rationale for having a middleman in between. If there is a lack of rationality, someone will lose out.
I don’t know if Tsutaya’s method is right, but I thought it was interesting. I’m not sure if I would buy a book that’s been read by chance there, and it was so crowded that I couldn’t use it…
Not long ago, there was a story about an English person who came to Japan and walked into a local bookstore and was surprised to see Christie and Queen novels lined up in paperback. He said he never saw anything like that in his own country.
If everything were concentrated on Amazon, there would be the problem that Amazon would be able to censor content. It would be nice if there was a social networking site where people could open up their personal library collections. Small bookstores will also participate and buy and sell.
I only go to art libraries, but even so, if I tell the receptionist that I’m looking for something, they’ll show me five or six books. It’s a surprisingly specialized category, but a human can still search more accurately and quickly than a touch panel.
It would be a shame for this knowledge to be buried because it is out of print. Books that have been published for more than 10 years should be made available for free electronically, if the author agrees.
This library is a textbook example of a system where employees are exploited for their lack of motivation, so please do something about the non-regular staff.
>>43 A public library staff member’s job is much easier than working at a convenience store cashier, just tapping barcodes at the counter and saying “Valid until November 5th” So the only people working there are unmotivated and incompetent women.
My wife works as a librarian, but the pay is low, but she says she wants to stick with it for the rest of her life. I wonder if it’s really that much fun.
