On the 27th, the Higashikurume City Board of Education in Tokyo announced that it had paid 176,000 yen in compensation to an illustrator who owned the copyright for an illustration that had been used without permission in a city junior high school’s “school newsletter.” According to the announcement, when a teacher at a municipal junior high school was creating an article for the school newsletter in November 2022 to introduce the activities of the tennis club, he mistakenly believed that he could use a tennis illustration he found on the Internet for free, and included the illustration alongside the article. The school newsletter was distributed to all students’ parents and was also posted on the school’s website. In May of this year, the junior high school was contacted by the illustrator’s lawyer and the unauthorized use was discovered. The school immediately removed the school newsletter containing the illustration from its website, and at the end of July the city paid compensation to the illustrator and the matter was settled.
