On July 8, 2024, Chinese media Oriental Network reported that the road surface had risen in multiple places on Shanghai”s ring elevated highway. According to the article, a citizen posted a video online on the 7th reporting that the road surface near the Siping Road exit of the ring elevated highway that runs through the city had risen, causing traffic congestion. When they inquired with the city”s Road Transport Business Development Center, they were told that the operator had already carried out repair work. It was also revealed that similar rises had been found in four places on the road surface of the city”s ring elevated highway, which is shaped like the character for “monkey,” and that repairs had already been made. A worker explained that the rises were due to the high temperatures that had been rising every day, and that the reinforced concrete layer of the viaduct had expanded and deformed due to the heat, causing internal stress to concentrate on the road surface. The road protection agency will prevent deformation by lowering the temperature of the road surface with water spraying, and will deploy personnel to constantly patrol the road surface condition. Regarding this incident, Chinese netizens have left comments such as, “I”m on a road in Shanghai right now and I can”t stop shivering,” “I actually passed a place where the road was raised, and I wonder if it was because of the heat,” “It feels like riding a horse,” “This doesn”t happen often on other roads, so isn”t it the result of accumulated stress from overloading in the past,” and “(Chinese roads) collapse when it rains and rise when the temperature rises.” (Translation and editing: Kawajiri) [Video] record china Tuesday, July 9, 2024 14:00
Does anyone remember the news about the new technology of kneading metal fibers instead of rebar? I think it was a long time ago, but I wonder if it”s been put to practical use yet?

I”ve seen the exposed rebars of bridges being worked on, and I was impressed by how much work it must have been to tie all the crossings together with wire. It”s the same with fixing railroad ties, but I think the excessive work is a countermeasure against distortion. And this kind of news is just slacking off on that.
I see this kind of news all the time. They don”t have good enough construction technology, so it”s better not to build unnecessary things. Why don”t we all just go back to being poor like before?
