Tomoaki Ogura, 77, Passes Away After Battling Bladder Cancer for Years

Ogura Tomoaki, who was active as a newscaster on Fuji TV’s morning information program “Tokudane!”, passed away on the afternoon of December 9, 2024. He was 77 years old. Ogura announced that he had bladder cancer in 2016 and underwent a total cystectomy in 2018. He is currently battling cancer, and was told at the hospital on December 4th that there was no treatment available.He returned home on December 6th and has been under his wife’s care. In an interview after the recording of the “Kokura Base” program on November 8, 2024, he said, “I don’t know when I’ll get sick and fall ill,” and expressed his gratitude to his wife who is caring for him in their old age despite living separately. Ogura was born on May 25, 1947 in Akita City, and joined what is now TV Tokyo in 1970. After working as a horse racing commentator, he began working as a freelance announcer in 1977, hosting a number of television and radio programs. He married his wife, who is 15 years younger than him, in 1985. When “Tokudane!” began airing in April 1999, his crisp opening remarks became a hot topic. He made comments that were sometimes harsh but also loving, and became a familiar morning face in living rooms across the nation. In 2016, he announced that he had bladder cancer. I had a total cystectomy in 2018. He then returned and served as the main anchor of “Tokudane!” for 22 years until March 2021. In October 2021, he announced that the bladder cancer he had previously undergone surgery had metastasized to his lungs. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and had begun chemotherapy. Ogura later revealed that he had undergone surgery to completely remove his left kidney.
