On the 26th, the Japan Fair Trade Commission conducted an on-site inspection of Amazon Japan, LLC (Tokyo), the Japanese subsidiary of the U.S. online retailer Amazon, on suspicion of violating the Antimonopoly Act, for allegedly forcing sellers on the online marketplace Amazon Marketplace to set prices lower than those of competing online shopping sites. This was revealed through interviews with those involved. This could be considered an “abuse of a dominant bargaining position” or “restrictive transactions” prohibited by the Antimonopoly Act. The FTC also plans to investigate Amazon and hear its side of the story through a report order and other means. We also aim to collect a wide range of information from exhibitors and others. Marketplace is an online marketplace where general retailers can sell their products and they appear on Amazon’s online shopping site. If multiple vendors are selling the product you searched for, only one product will be displayed prominently in the Buy Box, and the other products will only be linked. From the seller’s perspective, winning the cart box is a system that attracts customer attention as a “recommended” product on Amazon, and can lead to increased sales. According to sources, in exchange for the Buy Box, Amazon is accused of forcing sellers to lower their prices on its marketplace below those on other online shopping sites and to use its own shipping services. Amazon’s only stated condition for the display of the cart box is that the price must be “competitive compared to other sites.” The person in charge then reportedly told each seller that if they did not offer the product at a lower price than other online shopping sites, “the cart box would be removed.” It appears that the competing online shopping sites they were considering were Rakuten and Yahoo! The JFTC appears to believe that Amazon, which boasts the largest market share in Internet shopping in Japan, has unfairly increased its competitiveness without any self-help efforts by putting pressure on sellers. Amazon doesn’t apologize even when their purchase history is leaked or when they have a problem with their cloud. They run a lot of ads on old media as well as online media, so they can’t complain.
>>4 The person who created Amazon’s system was a guest at a medical association in Okayama and was desperately explaining about IT, but I guess hospital information is leaking out too…
I was searching for a certain pair of sneakers, but there were different sellers for each color and size, and some of them just said “not a competitive price” and didn’t even show me the price lol.
>>36 I don’t understand the mindset of people who go to the trouble of going to a store to buy things. It must be too much of a hassle to drive, bike, or walk. They’ll carry your heavy luggage right to your front door.
