Chinese Automakers Turn to Hybrids as EU Tariffs Impact Electric Car Sales

EU electric vehicle tariffs push Chinese automakers to hybrid cars, with Tucson Hybrid sales reaching 41,313 units from January to September.

Cumulative sales of the Tucson Hybrid in the European market from January to September reached 41,313 units. [Photo: Hyundai] Rising tariff barriers for electric cars in Europe are pushing Chinese automakers towards hybrid cars with both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The share of hybrid cars exported by Chinese companies to Europe jumped to 18 percent in the third quarter from 9 percent in the first quarter. According to Reuters and other sources, China’s BYD and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) are adjusting their strategies to increase exports of hybrid cars instead of electric cars in response to the European Union’s electric vehicle tariffs that were imposed in October. At the end of October, the European Commission decided to impose countervailing duties on imported Chinese-made electric vehicles for five years, raising the tariff rate to a maximum of 45.3%, but this tariff does not apply to hybrid cars. In addition to tariffs, the growing popularity of hybrid cars has also led Chinese automakers to adjust their strategies. According to the Association of the European Automotive Industry (ACEA), hybrid cars made up 32.8% of new EU vehicle sales in September, outperforming gasoline-powered cars at 29.8%. This is the first time since related statistics were compiled. In October’s statistics, hybrid cars accounted for 33.3% of all sales, outnumbering gasoline-powered cars at 30.8%. China’s hybrid car exports tripled in one year Chinese automakers are strong in plug-in hybrid cars. Plug-in hybrid cars are hybrid cars equipped with rechargeable batteries like electric cars, and BYD had a 40.1% share of the global market in July-September. The second and third places are also Chinese automakers. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Chinese automakers sold 65,800 plug-in hybrid cars in the European market between July and October, more than three times more than in the same period last year. The proportion of hybrid cars and plug-in hybrid cars among China’s automobile exports to Europe also increased to 18 percent. This is double the 9% recorded in the first quarter of this year. Just like electric cars, Chinese-made hybrid cars are also price competitive Just like Chinese-made electric cars, the biggest competitive advantage of Chinese-made hybrid cars is their price. Just as it opened the wallets of European consumers with cheap, high-performance electric cars, it is now deploying the same strategy in the hybrid car market. BYD recently launched a plug-in hybrid model, the Seal UDM-i, to compete with Volkswagen’s Tiguan and Toyota’s C-HRPHEV. The Seal UDM-i is up to 5 million won cheaper than Toyota and Volkswagen models. BYD also plans to launch three new plug-in hybrid models in Europe next year. Price competition is expected to intensify once BYD starts full-scale production at its European factories. BYD plans to start producing electric cars and plug-in hybrids at its Hungarian factory in 2026. Once the Hungarian factory is operational, it will be possible to avoid tariff barriers and save on costs such as export logistics, which will give the company more price competitiveness than rival companies. “This could spark fierce price wars if Chinese companies take advantage of the low tariffs on plug-in hybrids, which are partially substituting pure electric vehicles for hybrids and gasoline engine vehicles in the European market,” said Ian Fletcher, an analyst at S&P Global Mobility. ◇Hyundai fights back with “Hybrid SUV”

Toyota and other Japanese car makers’ main battlefield is North America. In Europe, there is a history of the company being viewed with suspicion and its expansion has been blocked.

> Just as with Chinese electric cars, the biggest competitive advantage of Chinese hybrid cars is price. They opened the wallets of European consumers with cheap, high-performance electric cars. Cheap means bad, right? Their EVs are terrible. What do you mean they can’t even make internal combustion engines properly and they say they have good performance?

Even though it’s called a hybrid, it’s not the Toyota-style full sync system, but a startup support (acceleration assistance) system. However, both can be sold as hybrid system-equipped vehicles when they are sold. However, China and Korea take advantage of this blind spot to sell their products.

A worse version of the first-generation Prius, but at a higher price. Furthermore, it is possible to do this at a craftsmanship level by assembling each unit individually,

but the surrounding patents have not been made public, so anything other than the prototype would be a patent dispute.

It seems like the punchline will be something like South Korea, which tried to purchase only core parts from Toyota and sell it as an original hybrid car, but then got mad when they realized it was cheaper to buy a new car than to buy the parts.
45<丶`∀´>(´・ω・`)(`Ha´ )san.Dec. 10, 2024 (Tue) 15:43:54.27ID:IPOwfWy5
Little Japanese people are mistaken, but more than half of BYD’s cars are engine hybrids, they have the world’s highest thermal efficiency of 50%, surpassing Toyota, and on top of that, a Camry class car costs 200,000,000 yen, so Japanese cars are no match for them.
