Hotel prices in Tokyo are soaring. Revpar (revenue per room available for sale per day) plummeted from around 10,000 yen in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but exceeded 14,000 yen by the end of 2023. In November of this year, the average price was 18,308 yen (according to the Tokyo Hotel Association). There are also reports that travelers from rural areas and business travelers have a hard time choosing a hotel. The increase in inbound tourism appears to be the main factor, but what mechanism is at work?
