Sekisui Chemical to mass-produce “flexible solar cells” with new company, DBJ – Nikkei Shimbun
December 26, 2024 11:20
Sekisui Chemical announced on the 26th that it will begin mass production of thin, bendable next-generation solar cells, the “perovskite type,” in 2027. A new company will be established in collaboration with the Development Bank of Japan, with the aim of achieving annual production of 100,000 kilowatts by 2027 and 1 million kilowatts by 2030. The total cost required by 2030 is expected to exceed 300 billion yen, half of which will be covered by government subsidies. The company is considering not only domestic demand but also overseas expansion. The new company, Sekisui Solar Film (Kita-ku, Osaka), will be established on January 6, 2025. Sekisui Chemical will hold an 86% stake, while the Development Bank of Japan will hold a 14% stake. In 2027, they will operate a 100,000-kilowatt production line, equivalent to the power consumption of approximately 25,000 households. The company will invest 90 billion yen in purchasing buildings and installing manufacturing equipment. The buildings, power supply equipment, cooling equipment, etc. of Sharp’s headquarters factory in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture will be repurposed. (Omitted)

Before we even consider whether it will bend or not, the question is whether it can generate electricity that exceeds its manufacturing costs. If there are other ways to provide electricity efficiently, cheaply, and reliably, then investing in those would be the first priority. Which science fiction novel is this, calling something eco-friendly just because it uses solar power?

The Σ Project was announced all over Japan, and each manufacturer was made to make something called a Σ terminal.
Our company, which was a system house in a local city, was also made to attend meetings regularly (we were happy to go).
Eventually, the company got a Σ terminal, but then the tone was toned down and in the end, we only certified something called Σ certified software, and then it disappeared. Apparently, while they were all in the meeting, they ended up creating something extremely outdated.

I’m excited to hear that it can generate power from something like an indoor light, so that remote controls and other low-power appliances won’t need batteries.

It’s said that it’s cheaper to line up Chinese panels than to build a fence out of building materials.
