Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito holding a press conference (Morning of the 9th, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry)
At a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on the 9th, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito Ken stated that the power supply and demand situation in the Tokyo metropolitan area this summer is “unpredictable.” He expressed the view that the request for power saving that the government postponed this year is not necessary under the current circumstances.
On the 8th, due to factors such as the extreme heat, the reserve margin, which indicates how much leeway there is in the power supply, temporarily fell below 3% in the Tokyo Electric Power Company”s jurisdiction. As it fell below the minimum required level, power was lent from the Chubu Electric Power Company area.
Saito explained that measures such as lent from other power areas and increased supply from thermal power plants did not impede stable supply.
Severe heat is expected to continue after the 9th. Saito expressed the view that the power supply and demand situation will continue to be severe. On the other hand, regarding the need for a power saving request, he said, “We have decided not to request power saving because we expect to be able to secure a reserve margin of at least 4% this summer.”
