On the 1st, NHK announced that construction of the “Information Building,” which will serve as the base for news coverage, as part of the reconstruction of its broadcasting center in Shibuya, Tokyo, has been completed. It will house a news centre, radio centre and international broadcasting studios. Construction costs increased by 5.7 billion yen from the initially planned 60 billion yen. NHK explained that the reason was the rising costs of construction materials and labor. The current broadcasting center has been in use since 1965, and due to its aging, it will be rebuilt on the same site in two or more phases. The first phase of construction will begin in the fall of 2020, with construction of the information building set to begin in May 2021. The information building was completed at the end of last month, and construction work on the necessary broadcasting equipment will be carried out inside the building in preparation for it starting operations in 2026, one year later than originally planned. The information building has 11 floors above ground and 1 floor below ground, and is approximately 63 meters tall. The total floor area is approximately 77,000 square meters. The construction cost of 65.7 billion yen includes the cost of the building, design and supervision, and power supply equipment, but the cost of broadcasting equipment is charged separately. Construction work from the second phase onwards will include the construction of a “production office building” which will house video and audio studios, and a “public building” which will house a public studio, etc. Chairman Nobuo Inaba has announced a “fundamental review” of the second term and beyond, taking into account factors such as the reduction in BS signals and rising material costs, and explained at a regular press conference in June that “we are considering putting together a review proposal by around spring next year.” Construction costs from the second phase onwards are expected to be 110 billion yen (initial plan), but NHK says it will “strive to keep costs down by reviewing the plan” while keeping an eye on the impact of rising material costs and other factors. [TV] “NHK produces too many programs” and “The reception fee can be lowered” – Experts criticize the massive organization with accumulated financial assets of 900 billion yen and an average salary of 10.94 million yen [Negi Udon★].
I thought that 5.7 billion out of 350 billion yen was a pretty cheap increase, but I guess it was broken down into smaller parts lol Are they not going to tell us the total construction cost?
There’s always money to be made, NHK. Whose money is it? It’s the reception fee, right? But many aren’t receiving it. It seems absurd to collect a reception fee when you don’t even receive the signal.
They’ve built a new building and lowered the reception fee a little bit because they were told to do so under the Suga administration
Actually, they’re really struggling financially, and the Yomiuri Shimbun wrote recently that they’re conspicuously repeating and reusing shows lol They were also sarcastic about how they’re trying to cover it up by putting “selection” next to the rebroadcast mark in the program guide, because it could lead to viewers avoiding it lol.
NHK should be returned to national ownership. They take advantage of the fact that the reception fee is not a tax and do whatever they want, and collection is a complete mess. If it were nationalized, there might be some cases where it would be thought of as unavoidable since it’s tax money.
