The government is considering expanding subsidies to support relocation to regional areas to include women who live and commute within Tokyo’s 23 wards and move there when they get married. A person involved revealed this on the 27th. The estimated amount is 600,000 yen per person. As the outflow of young women to Tokyo continues, the government will support “migrant marriages” to put a stop to excessive concentration in one area. The Cabinet Secretariat will include related expenses in its budget request for fiscal 2025. Limiting the program to women could be controversial, so details will be worked out ahead of the budget compilation at the end of the year. The Cabinet Secretariat plans to select several cities, towns and villages as relocation targets and implement model projects in fiscal 2013. The current subsidy is available to residents of Tokyo’s 23 wards or people who commute to the 23 wards from the greater Tokyo area (Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa). Regardless of gender, the condition is that the person is employed or starts a business in the new location, and the maximum amount available to single people is 600,000 yen.
