A study from Hiroshima University has revealed that caffeine drinks plus sweets significantly delay the body clock – even in mice whose day-night cycles are reversed.
On August 20, Hiroshima University announced the results of a study showing that sweetened caffeinated beverages, such as energy drinks and coffee with sugar, significantly delay the body clock. In some cases, nocturnal mice became diurnal. When mice were allowed to freely drink caffeinated sugar water (0.1% caffeine + 1% sucrose water) and their activity times were investigated, the start and end times of activity were significantly delayed. This change was not observed with unsweetened caffeinated water. The reason for this is that the sweetened caffeinated water caused a new long-term activity rhythm of 26 to 30 hours to emerge. “We believe that both caffeine and sweetness have an effect on this activity rhythm,” said the research team. When the administration of caffeinated sugar water was stopped, the mice’s activity rhythm returned to normal. Subsequent experiments revealed that the change in activity rhythm caused by drinking sweetened caffeine was not dependent on the central clock (neuronal nuclei in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus). The research team stated, “The results not only suggest that caffeine intake can make it difficult to sleep at night and lead to a lifestyle of going to bed and waking up late, but also show that adding sweeteners to caffeinated beverages further exacerbates these effects.” The research results were announced by a research team led by Associate Professor Tahara Masaru of the Department of Public Health at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Hiroshima University. The paper was published in the academic journal NPJ Science of Food on the 19th. itmedia August 20, 2024 16:35.
It’s a 30 hour cycle, so it shifts by 6 hours each day. So I go through cycles of being a day person and then a night person. I think most unemployed people have experienced this.
It’s no good just looking at the effects during a chemical reaction. If you can’t process the waste products after the reaction, the damage will be huge.
A survey of boys who had been incarcerated in juvenile detention centers for violent crimes in the past revealed that many of them drank more than six cans of sweetened canned coffee a day.
Artificial sweeteners and caffeine cause me to wake up at the usual time even on my days off, even without an alarm. I’d like to sleep more, but my body clock is scary.
It’s just the caffeine and sugar that makes it seem like it’s working, and people who pay a lot of money for energy drinks or energy drinks are stupid when tea, coffee and sugar are enough.
The only seven places in Japan where the minimum wage exceeds 1000 yen per hour are Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto. Even in Tokyo, where it has the highest minimum wage, the hourly wage is a low 1113 yen. Compared to other developed countries, wages in Japan are far too low.
