With historic price hikes and the decline in rice quality due to the heatwave, food bank organizations nationwide that support the needy are in a crisis. In a survey by the nonprofit organization “Food Bank Sendai” (Sendai City), about 60% of the 66 organizations surveyed nationwide said they had received less food donations. An executive of the organization said, “The number of people in need is increasing, but our food supply is running out,” and called for active donations.
In a survey conducted by Food Bank Sendai in July, 42 of the 66 organizations, including the organization, said they had received less donations. The tally of the 37 organizations that responded with monthly donation amounts showed that donations from April to June were down by 10 to 40 percent compared to the same period last year. In some cases, donations to the needy were reduced to get by.
In particular, donations of rice were down at nearly 70% of organizations. The heatwave caused poor harvests, and it is possible that old rice that had previously been donated by farmers is now being used for sale. Food Bank Sendai distributes food to about 400 to 500 people a month, but Director Takahiro Kawakubo says, “We only have about a month’s supply of rice in stock.”
>>1 Basically, the idea is that relief for the weak should be done with tax money. Children’s cafeterias became popular, but people started thinking, “Why should I give money to children on welfare? I’m already getting my living expenses.”
That’s because they have conditions like “only give us things with at least one month left until the expiration date.” If there’s still a month left, we’ll keep it, but if we’re planning to donate it but it’s been less than a month, we’ll refuse it. Because of that, even people who were proactive in the beginning and took it over will start to find it troublesome.
Is it not okay to eat expired food? What a luxurious system for those in poverty… Even working people are eating expired food with half-price stickers in this day and age
NHK Party: “We have requested disclosure of the list of Kids Door donors” [963243619] The NHK Party is starting something again to find out who donated to the organization that distributes food to families with children.
Wouldn’t it be better to have them live together in schools in marginal villages and become self-sufficient through agriculture? There is also abandoned farmland.
In the West, the Catholic Church would do everything, but I wonder what religious organizations in Japan do. There are temples and other places everywhere.
In the first place, food banks are supposed to be places to donate unwanted food that you don’t know how to handle. It’s wrong to donate because you’re told to. If there’s a shortage of donations, you shouldn’t ask for donations, but just buy food with the money you’re spending on the organization. For some reason, there’s a mysterious volunteer system where normal labor and commercial use are free and at your own expense, but don’t try to solve the problem for free.
