A supermarket where the rice section has been halved. Super Sanyo Director Abe Yoshikuni: “This is the rice section. Normally, this is also a rice section, but we’ve run out of the rice we have contracted for.” Due to the extreme heat and increased demand from inbound tourists, rice inventory has hit an all-time low. The rice shortage brings to mind the “Heisei rice turmoil.” Director Abe: “Some people are rushing to stock up, but I think people should buy the amount they will use up.” In response to the rice shortage, ekiben manufacturers are considering replacing the rice in bento boxes with toast. Chuoken CEO Ryuji Kodama: “I thought, what would I do if I ran out of rice and couldn’t make bento, so I posted, ’I tried making them.’ All we can do is come up with ideas together, including with our employees and customers, and get through this.” The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has explained that rice is “not in a tight supply situation.” (From the August 5, 2024 episode of “Good! Morning”).
>>5 Thailand was also suffering from shortages and was having a hard time, but they came to Japan to help because they thought Japan was having a hard time.
There were only 5kg bags on sale. It’s simply a hassle to have to buy it more often. I don’t mind it being more expensive, but I wish they would sell it in 10kg bags.
The media is inciting people lol. They did the same thing with toilet paper during the oil crisis, and even during the coronavirus pandemic. And you selfish losers are being incited to stock up lol.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries says that it exists based on calculations and statistics. Even in supermarkets, there are piles of them even though there is no Hitomebore. Discount stores probably have contracts where they buy on the spot and don’t know when they will get stock. (That’s why they are cheaper.)
I can say this now, but I once had a part-time job where we had to rush to the sales floor of a product that was in short supply and film the whole thing for TV. Because we had to sell out of the product, the TV crew would first buy so that there were about 10 left.
This seems a bit fishy. It’s piled high in every supermarket lol The price has gone up, but I wish they’d explain that it’s because of overhead costs and not lie.
>>38 No, it’s just because the contracted farmers didn’t produce much or the orders exceeded their capacity. If you have a contract with a farmer, even if you can sell bento boxes, you will only be able to get the amount of rice that is specified in the contract.
