The average age of UK passenger cars continues to rise. The background to this is the soaring prices of new cars, which are hurting new car dealers while benefiting insurance companies and privately owned repair shops. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), overall new car sales have increased by 6% so far this year but this is largely to businesses, with sales to private consumers down 11.8%. Meanwhile, of the 34 million vehicles on the road, 16 million – or almost one in two – are more than 10 years old. Of these, 10.5 million were registered more than 12 years ago.

In the UK, the older the car, the lower the tax.

Every country is similar. Because cars don’t break down as easily, people are driving them for longer periods of time.

The battery in an EV will wear out after 1-2 years of driving. That’s only natural, since it uses the same technology as smartphones.

The battery is also effective
Even if it gets cheaper, it won’t be easy to replace the battery.
The battery also functions as part of the frame.

Compact hybrids and light vehicles have low taxes. Taxes will be higher because we don’t need things like Land Cruisers.

My wife’s Land Cruiser is 20 years old and still has plenty of life left. She doesn’t go on long trips so it’s only got about 40,000 km on it though.

Even if you buy a new car for 3.5 million yen, the value will depreciate by 10% (350,000 yen) per year, so after 10 years your trade-in value will be around 350,000 yen. So, if the car has been fully depreciated and repair costs are less than 300,000 yen a year, you’ll save money by continuing to drive it. The difference in taxes and gasoline costs over the course of a year is only a few hundred thousand yen.

My car has done 340,000km since I bought it in 1992 and it still runs fine. However, parts supply has ended, so if it breaks, it may not be possible to repair it. It works fine, so I don’t feel like buying a new one. I’ve driven a Nissan once, but it didn’t have a synchro and the brake pedal was on the right, so it was very difficult to brake. There were times when I didn’t want to ride it because it was difficult for me to drive.

Aren’t gasoline dealers making money by selling new cars and doing maintenance and inspections?

I’m surprised EV dealers can operate without their own repair shops
If they stop selling cars they’ll just fire them.

It’s impossible to inspect an EV without special equipment, so the dealer’s inspection facility makes all the money.

Japanese cars have been lasting longer recently, but 10 years and 100,000km is the standard for when Japanese cars break down, and that’s just the custom. In the West, cars don’t usually break down even after that, and Japanese cars don’t last that long.

European cars don’t break down? They’re so poor quality that the term “European quality” is thrown around in the industry. The US is strong though.

In Europe, if your car breaks down and you get stranded, you’re unlikely to die,
but in America, you can easily die from heatstroke, freezing to death, or crime, so American cars seem to be tougher in that regard.
