The Tokyo Fire Department is calling for caution, as last year saw the highest number of fires ever caused by lithium-ion batteries used in mobile batteries.
This video captures the moment a fire breaks out on an electrically assisted bicycle that uses lithium-ion batteries.
The fire broke out a few seconds after the bicycle was stopped, and within a few minutes, the entire bicycle was engulfed in flames.
Last year, there were a record 167 cases of lithium-ion battery fires in the Tokyo Fire Department’s jurisdiction, and this year there have been 107 cases by the end of June, which is on pace to exceed last year.
By product, the most fires were caused by mobile batteries, followed by smartphones and electrically assisted bicycles.
The Tokyo Fire Department says, “Please use genuine chargers and batteries specified by the manufacturers, and refrain from using any that show abnormalities such as heating up while charging.”

I’ve been using this Panasonic for 17 years and I’ve never had to replace the battery. It only runs 5-6km on a full charge, so that’s enough.

I think Panasonic 17 years ago was referring to an electric assist bicycle, but has it been lithium since that long ago?

That’s simply because you’re using a cheap non-genuine battery that you bought online.

We should establish safety standards for batteries. Anything that doesn’t pass the standards should be banned or subject to high tariffs.

If you use a cable that is almost broken at the base, the battery will catch fire.
0026Anonymous DonburakoJul. 15, 2024 (Mon) 16:55:53.53ID:JgE9g8oJ0(2/3)
The problem is that compatible batteries are cheap, or rather, the original batteries are too expensive.

Even if you use genuine products, they can catch fire sometimes. The risk can be reduced, but it cannot be reduced to zero due to the structure. And once they catch fire, you have no choice but to leave them alone until they burn out. That’s what lithium-ion batteries are like.

Even if you buy domestic products, the cost won’t be zero. It would be nice if solid-state batteries with a low risk of fire became cheaper.

If it spreads this far, who knows where the fire will break out. We have no choice but to secure a power source other than lithium.
