China’s holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds amount to about $775 billion (about 120 trillion yen), the second largest in the world after Japan. For details, see the source 2024/11/18

As was the case with Trump’s sanctions four years ago, the US and China have very different amounts of economic ammunition, so if there is a sanctions war, China will lose.

The US is the world’s strongest military power, so if it were a weaker country, they could seize ports and other things as a debt trap, but it’s basically like lending money to the Yakuza, so can they collect it? That’s the question.

It depends on the selling period, so it’s hard to say, but
the foreign exchange market is $8 trillion a day, and if 7% of that is USD-CHY, that’s $0.56 trillion/day.

China sells US Treasury bonds
↓
US Treasury bond prices fall (interest rates rise)
Japan, which holds the most US Treasury bonds in the world, sees its assets fall in value
This pattern is also troubling.
