Chinese Government Announces “Action Plan for Saving Food and Preventing Waste”

The General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council recently jointly issued the “Action Plan for Food Conservation and Prevention of Food Waste,”
calling on all regions and departments to seriously implement it based on actual conditions. The overall goal of the action plan is to improve the long-term mechanism for food and food conservation by the end of 2027, continuously improve the statistical survey system, standard norms and indicator system for food loss and food wastage, reduce the loss rate in food production, storage, transportation and processing to below the international average level, significantly reduce per capita food waste in the catering industry, state institutions, schools and corporate canteens, and effectively control food and beverage waste. At the same time, we will promote food conservation through sustained efforts and participation of the entire nation, and foster an anti-wasteful social atmosphere. The food and beverage industry is being urged to take action to prevent waste through zero food waste campaigns. Specifically, the law includes instructions such as: restaurant managers should, when necessary, remind customers to order appropriate portions; clearly display the specifications and portions of dishes and main dishes; actively promote products with smaller portions; and proactively offer the option to take leftovers home.
