[Yonhap News, Seoul] South Korea’s largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, held an emergency general meeting of lawmakers in the National Assembly on the 4th and issued a resolution calling on President Yoon Seok-youl, who declared a state of emergency the previous night and then lifted it six hours later, to resign immediately. He indicated that he would proceed with impeachment if President Yoon does not resign. In its resolution, the party pointed out that “President Yoon’s declaration of emergency martial law is a clear violation of the Constitution,” and emphasized that the requirements for a declaration of emergency martial law had not been met. “The declaration of martial law itself is completely invalid and a serious violation of the Constitution,” he argued, adding, “This is a serious act of civil unrest and a perfect reason for impeachment.” He went on to state his stance that “we will not sit idly by and watch President Yoon’s crime of undermining constitutional government by trampling on the Constitution and democracy,” and called for President Yoon to resign immediately. “If President Yoon does not resign immediately, we will immediately begin impeachment proceedings in accordance with the will of the people,” he said, adding, “We will fight to the end together with all the people to protect the democracy and constitutional order of the Republic of Korea.” Yonhap News 2024.12.04 08:27.
