Following South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol’s temporary declaration of “emergency martial law,” six opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion to the National Assembly that not only listed the unconstitutionality of the declaration, but also criticized the Yoon administration’s diplomatic stance of seeking reconciliation with Japan. This strongly reflects the views of the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest progressive opposition party. If Yoon, who has placed importance on Japan-US-South Korea cooperation to counter the threats posed by China, North Korea and Russia, is ousted and a change of government takes place, a major shift in diplomacy toward Japan is expected. The impeachment motion was submitted on the 4th, the day the emergency state of emergency was lifted, by six parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea led by Lee Jae-myung, who is considered a leading candidate in the next presidential election, and the Fatherland Reform Party led by Cho Kuk, who served as a high-ranking official in the former Moon Jae-in administration. In their impeachment motion, the six parties point out that the state of emergency declared in peacetime, not in a state of emergency such as wartime, and the accompanying proclamations that completely ban parliamentary and political activity, are unconstitutional. The court ruled that sending armed troops into the National Assembly and attempting to arrest the Speaker and leaders of the ruling and opposition parties constituted the crime of treason under the Criminal Code, which disrupts national order. In addition, the opposition party included criticism of Yoon’s domestic and foreign affairs in general as a conclusion to their impeachment bill, alleging that he has not listened to the voice of the people since taking office. Regarding the Yoon administration’s diplomacy, which has placed importance on countries that share the same values such as freedom and democracy and has promoted improved relations with Japan, he said, “It has abandoned its duty to ensure national security and protect the people by viewing North Korea, China, and Russia as enemies and adhering to a Japan-centered foreign policy and appointing people who are inclined toward Japan.” The article also includes China’s unique view on diplomacy, stating that “policies such as appointing people favorable to Japan to key government positions have led to isolation in Northeast Asia.” He also criticized the crowd accident in Itaewon, Seoul in October 2022, in which 159 people, including two Japanese, were killed, saying, “As the head of the executive branch, he has consistently acted irresponsibly and shown no interest whatsoever in the lives, safety, and happiness of the people.” As for the reason why Yoon decided to declare state of emergency, he pointed out that it was to avoid uncovering and punishing the allegations against Yoon and his wife that have been pursued by the opposition party. Well, I’m sure Sankei is excited to have the material to criticize Korea to their heart’s content. I’d like to see an exchange diary with Asahi as well.
>>19 That’s what’s supposed to happen, because they’ll always start fighting over it. The pie doesn’t get bigger, so the new top players just fight over it lol.
I think we are past the point where we can just blame Japan and get away with it. I am looking forward to seeing whether the actions Korea takes in the future will be bad or very bad.
I think it’s correct to say that South Korea is isolated from China, Russia, and North Korea, but I feel like they’re forgetting the important fact that this has been the country’s position since its founding.
