Masaaki Taira (57), who joined the Cabinet of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on October 1 as Minister of Digital Affairs for the first time, has received a total of 2.88 million yen in donations from a company in which three employees, including the president, were arrested on suspicion of fraud in June of this year, Weekly Bunshun has learned. ■ He received donations from a notorious company
“He has served as Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and Vice-Minister of the Cabinet Office. When Ishiba was Minister of Regional Revitalization in the Abe Shinzo administration, Taira, who was Vice Minister of the Cabinet Office, and Koizumi Shinjiro, who was Parliamentary Vice-Minister of the Cabinet Office, worked together as “Team Ishiba” (political reporter).
The new Minister Taira has already been accused of “politics and money.” The Liberal Democratic Party’s Tokyo 4th District Branch, of which Taira is the representative, received donations from a “notorious company’’ between 2011 and 2022. “(This company) has been inflating its sales figures for about 20 years since around 2003 to make profits for the current period. The company submitted financial statements to the tax office that had been adjusted to make its liabilities and assets add up. “The company received loans from many financial institutions based on financial statements that were falsely presented and inaccurate,” said a reporter from the social affairs department. The total amount that the company defrauded from multiple banks was 1.1 billion yen. Taira had been receiving donations for many years from a company whose president was arrested on charges of fraud. Professor Hiroyuki Kamiwaki of Kobe Gakuin University, who is an expert on political funds, said, “It’s possible that money defrauded from creditors was donated and flowed into the chapters. “Moral consideration would be to consider returning it,” he said.
