The Ministry of Defense has decided to include in its fiscal 2025 budget request, which will be compiled at the end of August, the largest defense budget ever, exceeding 8 trillion yen for the first time. In order to strengthen island defense, the government has budgeted funds for the acquisition of attack unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) capable of eliminating invading enemies, and is making arrangements to fully introduce them into the Self-Defense Forces. Multiple sources revealed this on the 16th. In order to drastically strengthen its defense capabilities, the government plans to spend a total of approximately 43 trillion yen over the five years from fiscal 2023 to 2027. The request for 8 trillion yen for fiscal 2013 is in line with this, and would represent a rapid increase following the increase from approximately 5.4 trillion yen at the beginning of fiscal 2022 to approximately 6.8 trillion yen in fiscal 2023 and over 7.9 trillion yen in fiscal 2024. However, it was discovered that a large amount of money was left unspent in fiscal 2011, and the decision on the start date of the tax increase that will cover part of the funds has been postponed. The appropriateness of the increase is likely to be debated. Regarding drones, the government is promoting their use as “unmanned asset defense capability,” one of the seven pillars of strengthening defense capabilities. Because it can reduce human casualties in combat, it is positioned as a “game changer” that will completely transform the face of modern warfare, and there are also plans to deploy it at sea and on land. >>1 Considering the flight distance of drones, it’s unclear whether they can be used for island defense. If we extend the drone’s flight distance, it will become too expensive to be disposable. Support systems such as unmanned underwater drone carriers will also be necessary to carry the drones to effective range.
>>1 I agree with increasing defense spending, but first we need to make sure that each of them is in ruins. Start by renovating and maintaining the defense base. How long do you intend to use it in this dilapidated state?
Finally drones? It feels like it’s too late to realize the importance of drones now. Is that also because of Abe, who was afraid of drones and banned them? Even though he was so afraid, he was assassinated.
What I learned from this experience is that drones are useful because they are cheap, but they would be useless if they were high-performance and expensive.
If you work and pay taxes you lose big time. If you consume and pay taxes you lose big time. We’re a beggarly nation where only medical and defense workers benefit lol.
If the economy grows, defense spending will increase automatically, but it’s a percentage of GDP, so the LDP doesn’t seem interested in growing the economy.
Check out China’s Ali Express. You can buy a drone with a camera for 600 yen lol. Just hurry up and get nuclear weapons. Ukraine’s uprising is a shitty coincidence lol.
