Japan Coast Guard’s $600M Drone Purchase Faces Criticism Amid Public Struggles

Japan Coast Guard’s $600M budget for U.S.-made drones sparks debate as opposition questions necessity amid economic hardships.

Akihisa Kameda (Constitutional Democratic Party) 🟦 General Branch Chief of Fukuoka 7th District iOmuta, Yanagawa, Yame, Chikugo, Miyama, Hirokawa @kamedaakihisa
The supplementary budget request of the Japan Coast Guard is 91.2 billion yen. Even though some of the initial budget (293.5 billion yen) has been brought forward, the new request is nearly 30 billion yen. This includes three unpiloted aerial vehicles (drones) worth 21.8 billion yen, which will likely be made in the United States as usual. With people’s lives facing extreme hardship, we must carefully examine the cost-effectiveness of this drone, taking into account maintenance costs. Just because it is the Japan Coast Guard, it should not be allowed to request a large budget without carefully examining the necessity and policy effectiveness. While the JCG’s authority remains the same, how much sense does it really make to simply increase the number of ships and aircraft and buy large American-made drones? With personnel numbers still significantly understaffed, won’t this just further exhaust those in the field and exacerbate the decline in morale?
Either way, with the LDP and Komeito now in the minority, the budget will likely be closely scrutinized. Related: Japan Coast Guard to purchase multiple “large unmanned patrol aircraft” Previously they had to “borrow” them, but now they are finally self-sufficient?

This guy is against the introduction of only 3 more planes, he must have some personal grudge against the JCG lol
The JMSDF is introducing 23 planes lol.

Did the Constitutional Democratic Party slack off again and not discuss the budget?

Good luck, Constitutional Democratic Party. Don’t lose to the Japanese.

We should save money from the salaries of useless opposition politicians. They should be paid on a commission basis for implementing bills and policies.

Firing humans and increasing the number of drones would definitely be more useful in modern warfare.

Is this about the Japan Coast Guard, not the MSDF? Or the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism?

It would cost less money than increasing the number of Coast Guard personnel and ships.

Since this is a party that includes lawmakers who have openly declared they would seek asylum overseas, I guess the mindset of reviewing government projects is deeply ingrained in them.

It’s a good cost-performance ratio to have drones monitor the vast Japanese oceans. There are hardly any people willing to become sailors these days, so it can’t be helped.

I think it’s just a proper use of money, but it’s nothing compared to anti-Japanese politicians acting all high and mighty with our tax money.

Cut the salaries of lawmakers and use the money for national defense. Using tax money for national defense is more useful than wasting salaries.

That’s pretty obvious.

They can fly for more than 24 hours
They introduced just one as a test run, but it was so easy to use that they quickly expanded to three, and now they’re adding three more
I guess that’s the ability the JCG wants most.

It would be much cheaper than increasing the number of patrol boats and personnel.
