“Miyata smells like cigarettes” – Gymnast Miyata Shoko, who withdrew from the Paris Olympics, was reported for “drinking and smoking” in May as well! The association’s “tendency to cover up” has led to this unprecedented and abnormal situation.
“This is the first time in history that someone has withdrawn from the Olympics due to a scandal, and it will surely be talked about as a stain on the Japanese national team,” said a JOC official. In response to the issue of drinking and smoking by Shoko Miyata (19), who was selected as a member of the Japanese women’s gymnastics team for the Paris Olympics, the Japan Gymnastics Association held an emergency press conference in Tokyo on July 19 and announced that Miyata had violated the national team’s code of conduct and had withdrawn from the Olympics. Miyata returned to Japan on the 18th from his training camp in Monaco and was interviewed by Japan Gymnastics Association Executive Director Kenji Nishimura and others, where he reportedly admitted to drinking and smoking. On the other hand, it is also true that many people were of the opinion that it would be too harsh to punish him, given that he was only 19 years old and had just two months until his birthday. I believe that Tamesue Dai, who was also an Olympian, was a problem with x, but I don’t think it was serious enough to take away his right to represent Japan. Please make a calm decision,” he said, calling for lenient punishment. However, given that the place where he admitted to drinking was within the National Training Center Athlete Village in Kita-ku, Tokyo, which is considered a “holy place” for athletes, there is no way to defend him. Furthermore, the Japan Football Association’s code of conduct clearly states that “in principle, smoking is prohibited at all times at locations where the Japan national team is active, even for those over the age of 20 (a complete ban will be gradually implemented over several years from fiscal 2016).” On the other hand, the fact that the scandal was made public through an internal whistleblower only added to the seriousness of the matter. Female athletes and coaches say Miyata smells like cigarettes. Miyata was expected to be the next generation star of the Japanese women’s gymnastics team after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when the generational change is underway. However, a person involved with gymnastics from her junior high school days revealed her true face as follows. “He had incredible talent, but he also had a rather mischievous temperament… There was a time when he wasn’t into gymnastics, and he was mentally unstable.” Another gymnastics coach also spoke about Miyata’s “uniqueness.” “My students are still in their mid-teens, which means they are at a promising age and in a good way they are in the prime of their development. In that respect, Miyata is only 19 years old, so she must look much older to those girls. Even though this was already a problem, Miyata’s arrogant attitude and arrogant way of speaking made his students feel quite intimidated at the match venue. It’s true that she has the skills and power to be among the best in Japan, having won the NHK Cup three times in a row, but more than that, she has a “queen-like temperament,” and I told my girls “not to learn things like that.” Cigarettes? It was well known that she smoked, everyone knew that.” A member of the gymnastics association looks on with a bitter expression as he looks back on this whole incident. “It’s truly a deep regret. People inside the association, who had been hearing bad things about Miyata from various quarters, had been reporting it to their higher-ups for some time now. The press conference itself is full of questions. They say they interviewed Miyata, and were left speechless by his statements such as, “I only drank and smoked once each,” and “I was under a lot of pressure to achieve my athletic goals, which led me to do such things.” Is it possible to be a one-time smoker? There have been rumors about Miyata’s smoking for some time. During training camps and tournaments, other female athletes and coaches would often say things like, ’Miyata smells like cigarettes.’” According to interviews conducted by the association, she first smoked sometime between the end of June and the beginning of July… “This too is clearly a lie. In fact, the final Olympic qualifying tournament was held in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture in May of this year, and there were reports that she had been drinking and smoking at the hotel where she was staying. However, the association did not conduct any interviews or other investigations at the selection stage, as the responsibility for management lies with the respective teams. In other words, their stance was that Juntendo University’s head coach, Harada Mutsumi, should be the one to provide guidance.” (ibid.) “The path to a medal is to avoid making mistakes”… Harada said in tears at the press conference, “I never expected that this kind of behavior would violate the rules.” “This statement is extremely irresponsible, and if he had no feelings despite being in close contact with the person, he is unfit to be a leader. There’s no way they didn’t know.” (ibid.) The association was aware of Miyata’s drinking and smoking habits, but has ignored them to this day. For the full text, see source in previous thread.
The Gymnastics Association is doing a terrible job of stripping someone of their Olympic qualification rights for something that happened in high school.
People say it’s his fault for hiding it and that they should have warned him sooner, but ultimately it’s a matter of his own awareness. For Miyata, drinking and smoking were his priorities > Olympic representative. If participating in the Olympics was important, he should have just refrained from drinking and smoking for now. Why couldn’t he refrain at such an important time?
That’s right. There’s no way that a Japanese association with a culture of concealment and laxity would expel someone on a first offense. I warned him off the record multiple times, but he didn’t listen.
> Miyata’s arrogant attitude and arrogant way of speaking made his students feel quite intimidated at the match venue. Conservatives, here’s the answer.
