On the 10th, LDP Policy Research Council Chairman Tokai Kisaburo received a proposal from the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) at the party headquarters calling for the early realization of the selective system of separate surnames for married couples. The party plans to begin internal discussions soon.
After meeting with Tokai, Keidanren Diversity Promotion Committee Chairman Uotani Masahiko (Shiseido Chairman) told reporters, “It is important to have a thorough discussion as a first step.”
The LDP established a “Working Team on the Future of the Surname System (WT)” in 2021 to summarize the issues, but has postponed a conclusion. The party is divided between those in favor and those cautious.
